Hello Nairalanders,

Please I need help from your vast knowledge banks in going about this matter without being sidelined or cheated . I am interested in a patent which I believe will be of very good marketable value and lucrative if commercialised here in Nigeria.

I am an entrepreneur. This will be a start-up business. I am hoping to act as a middle man btw the investor and inventor, though this is solely going to be our(the investor and I) affair once we pay off the patent owner.

The question is, how do I commercialise a patent with an expectation of financing through seed funding or angel investing?

Any ideas?

Mods pls

Do you have a particular patent in mind? The type will determine some of the strategies you'd employ. Also typically patent holders demand royalty payments over the period of use. To pay off a patent holder may require a very large sum are you certain an investor will want to lay out a lump sum for a business he is not sure of yet?

I get it now, so it can be a stumbling block to kick start the biz. I wonder why patent holder may require a pay off, just like you said the amount is very huge.

Can much do you think royalties can involve?

Typically royalties will be 5%-30% of the profits depending on your negotiations and what kind of product/service you are using the patent for.
