There was low turnout of potential voters in Ekiti on
Saturday as eligible residents participated in the test-
running of the card reader by the Independent
National Electoral Commission.
The mock accreditation was conducted in Dallimore,
Ward 009, with 21,631 registered voters of which
14,461 had collected their Permanent Voter Cards.
As of 11.30am, no fewer than 60 people had been
accredited in Dallimore polling unit 002.
The Technical Officers revealed that the average time
for the accreditation ranged between four and six
seconds.
Members of European Union Election Observers, Mrs
Rumi Ana Decheva and Mr Uros Urstga,
who monitored the mock accreditation, commended
INEC for the initiative, saying it would help in
enhancing the credibility of the country’s
electoral process.
The chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political
Parties in Ekiti State, Tunji Ogunlola, in an interview
with our correspondent after monitoring the
exercise, said, “It is very transparent, reliable and
fast. It will make rigging impossible.”
Ogunlola, who said he monitored the exercise in
company with a few other political parties,
commended INEC for a job well done and advised all
Nigerians to support the commission.
Former Commissioner for Tourism under ex-
Governor Kayode Fayemi’s government, Alhaji
Ayodele Jinadu, and ex-Chairman, Ado Ekiti
Local Government, Mr Sunday Ibitoye, described the
exercise as a huge success.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Sam
Olumekun, who monitored the event, said it had
convinced Nigerians about the usefulness and
relevance of the device in the coming
general elections.
He said, “We would have appreciated if the turnout
has been better, but we have been able to convince
the people about the workability of the machines,
which was the main issue.
“We are compiling the list of those who cannot be
accredited with these machines. Their cases will be
reported to Abuja for necessary actions. If you see
the number of times it required to get
people accredited, one will be convinced that the
Smart Card Reader has been a success. Some spent
even less than two minutes, some four seconds and
some not accredited at all.
“We are compiling the Incident Report Forms to be
able to look into all these variations and come out
with a form to use.”

If the average time for accreditation ranges from 4-6 seconds using card reader, then it is faster than the conventional checking of register for voters name by INEC.
