As Politics, no doubt, is a dirty game; and elections are often won and lost as a result of propaganda. Political parties go as far as possible to mask the truths and display only things that reflect them in good lights.
The obscene levels of hypocrisy that we have witnessed this campaign season would have been hilarious, if not for the sobering thought that millions of gullible Nigerians have been had. Propaganda is certainly one major part of politics. However, we seem to have taken this aspect of electioneering far more serious; to the detriment of our democratic progress.
The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has led the charge in this game of hypocrisy; and the examples abound. Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, widely acknowledged by both critics and fans to be one of the country’s current best performing governors, has been made to look very silly in this campaign season. Fashola, whose party has a 72-year-old presidential candidate, went on record to dismiss the 58-year-old Jimi Agbaje, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Lagos governorship candidate as being too old.
In Osun State, Governor Rauf Aregbesola has campaigned vigorously for his party, the APC, as being sensitive to the plight of the masses and would implement a people-friendly manifesto to create jobs and empower the poor if elected at the centre. In his state, civil servants are currently being owed five months wages. Same scenario plays out in Imo State, where APC Governor Rochas Okorocha’s re-election bid is facing stiff resistance from owed contractors and teachers.
Last week, former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, praised former president Olusegun Obasanjo to high heavens. As Obasanjo celebrated his 78th birthday, the APC leader commended the former president for being a ‘nationalist’. Rewind to just two years back, the same Tinubu had (and rightly so) lampooned the former president as a disgrace to the Yoruba race, especially for having discriminated against Lagos State by withholding federal allocations while in power because both men were frequently at logger-heads.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also provided its fair share of hypocrisy in this period. A recent documentary, believed to have been sponsored by the party, chronicled the alleged vast real estate that Tinubu has fraudulently acquired in Lagos State and Abuja. While many people believe the allegations to be true, it is worth noting that the federal government has failed to prosecute Tinubu for these alleged crimes. However, the greater hypocrisy in this is that President Goodluck Jonathan has also acquired vast real estate in questionable circumstances.
The hypocrisy is alarming; but what is more troubling is the fact that our politicians believe, and invest more energy, in selling absurdity to the Nigerian voters. Where attempts are made to sell real issues, they are glossed over; perhaps rightly so, because Nigerians have failed to concentrate on these real issues. We would prefer to be entertained by the antics of such actors as Femi Fani-Kayode and Rotimi Amaechi than to scrutinize the policy ideas being sold by such people as Osita Chidoka and Kayode Fayemi.
This sad state of affairs can still be changed. The elections are still weeks away and it is not too late for increased public scrutiny on the real issues that should determine who gets the votes. This is one area that the media needs to lead the campaign. While we understand that the media thrives on sensationalism, especially with an audience such as Nigeria, we must also ask that the media equally informs and educates the electorate by highlighting these real issues and questioning them.
For instance, the APC has proposed various welfare programmes such as direct cash handouts to millions of the poor in the society. This is a very noble proposal, no doubt, but looking increasingly impossible with the present economic realities. The APC wrote its manifesto before oil prices crashed to below $50 per barrel. Being that crude remains Nigeria’s biggest source of revenue, how do present realities affect this policy? Will the party discard it if voted into power? If not, how will it fund this and other welfare programmes?
These, and more, are the issues that should be on the front burner. Presidential and governorship debates should take over the airwaves and not documentaries. The vibrant social media space should focus more on these real issues. Civil society groups should begin to sensitise voters about their rights and what promises can be extracted from vote seekers. The entertainment has lasted for far too long, it is time we became informed.
