Vladimir Putin Russian President 'missing' by DaBullIT(m): 12:18am On Mar 14, 2015
There is speculation in Moscow the Ukraine crisis and slaying of an opposition politician has caused a breakdown in Vladimir Putin's health.

But another theory, advanced by the lawyer of murdered Boris Nemtsov, was that the strongman may be lying low because he is "afraid" of an assassination bid.

Putin loves to be seen as an ever-present action man, but the Russian president has been absent from public view for a week.

His retreat from the limelight coincides with a looming sense of economic crisis, and shocking allegations that a police figure close to a key Putin ally - the ruler of Chechnya Ramzan Kadurov - ordered Nemtsov's brutal killing.

The 62-year-old's unusual absence has dented his tough guy image, according to some correspondents.

His aides scrambled to explain he was healthy and his macho handshake remained so strong "it breaks your hand".

But on Thursday he failed to attended a key session with his FSB secret service, postponed another important meeting over a breakaway Georgian region, faced claims his government could resign, as well as allegations that one of his closest ex-KGB allies, Igor Sechin, boss of Rosneft, was on the point of quitting.

A day earlier he aborted a trip to Kazakhstan with a source in the ex-Soviet republic claiming he was ill.

Putin was last seen in public when he met with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on 5 March.

Official pictures have emerged of meetings since then, but rumours say these in fact took place earlier before his sudden and unexplained disappearance.

Nemtsov's lawyer claimed Putin may be scared over the high profile murder yards from the Kremlin, suggesting the Russian leader maybe in hiding fearing an assassination bid.

"Perhaps Putin, even completely sincerely, was bewildered and even afraid," said Vadim Prokhorov.

"Because if you can do that next to the Kremlin, then is it not possible to do it along the route of the presidential motorcade?"

In December, Putin brushed aside claims he could be overthrown.

"I can assure you that we don't have palaces, so a palace coup isn't really possible.

"The official presidential residence is the Kremlin.

"It is well protected."

Lately the Kremlin tsar has been under more pressure than at any time in his 15 years at the top of Russian politics.

The West's furious reaction to his invasion of Crimea and support for rebels in eastern Ukraine has led to sanctions which have thrown the Russian economy into crisis.

The Nemtsov killing has opened subterranean battles inside his entourage.

And the low oil price has added to his financial woes, while Britain announced the prime minister will follow Chancellor Angela Merkel and not attend a major Moscow military fanfare to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two in May.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the health speculation over Putin as "spring fever".

The leader was "holding meetings all the time" to solve the "crisis".

"There is no need to worry. Everything is fine," said Peskov, not explaining why Putin did not make an appearance to disarm the rumour-mongers.

The spate of speculation over his condition recalled regular health scares over his predecessor Boris Yeltsin, and a clutch of geriatric Soviet leaders.

The speculation is that he is sick : yes .
Others say that having been increasingly isolated, he is having some secret consultations with his few allies, much of whom are more or less pariah nations, over the increasing escalations and provocations withing his region.
wishing him well though.

Opinion of a Russian political contributor from a site i post frequently was that according to Nikolai Svanidze, famous journalist, historian, politologist and activist

Putin just needed a bit of rest is all. After all, he explained, remember, unlike in the West, where Presidents or Chancellors and such have Parliaments and whatnot to help them make decisions, that's not the case in Russia. In Russia, everything hangs on Putin. Literally EVERYTHING. Nobody else can control the FSB and other elements of the security apparatus, because they only respect Putin as their leader. Nobody can deal with the thuggish clans and factions that make up Russia's ruling class, by region, from the Kadyrov clan in Chechnya to all the others. And right now, he had to break up a tough squabble between the Moscow FSB (old school KGB guys) and Kadyrov, over the Nemtsov murder. It's not something most Russians would ever know about. But it is becoming more and more clear to those who understand: the Chechens that killed Nemtsov, acting on Kadyrov's orders, did so, in Moscow, without the approval of the FSB. Kadyrov, Putin's darling, wanted to please his Tsar, but ended up crossing the FSB on their own turf. They didn't want to bump off Nemtsov just yet. He mixed and messed everything up for them, unwittingly. Before, as a Kremlin favorite, Kadyrov was untouchable, and so were his guys. Not anymore.

They even kill one, right in the Chechen capital, Grozny, who tried to resist (that fellow was a Chechen police officer and personal friend of Kadyrov, killing him on Kadyrov's turf was a message, an answer for the unsanctioned murder of Nemtsov on FSB territory). Supposedly, Putin agonized over this for hours. Had to choose between the FSB, his tribe, and Kadyrov, one if his closest allies, the man who, in his own words, "would lay down my life for Russia and Putin". In the end, I guess as consolation, he gave Kadyrov a medal. But, Svanidze thinks, it all took a big emotional toll on him, so he needs a bit of RR right now.

As for coups, Svanidze says when we suddenly see PM Medvedev gone and replaced by someone from either the military or FSB, we know there is a coup. As is, while Medvedev is still up there, that's a sign Putin is still in control. Medvedev is his buffer between himself and all of them. And, also, the Prime Minister of Russia becomes President in the event of the sitting President's impeachment or death. So, if there was a coup, they would first install own PM. That hasn't happened, so, this is nothing serious
