For a long time now, there has been a massive degradation of the land in the Niger Delta as a result of crude oil exploration. The waters in that region are also not spared as a result of oil spillage which has made fishing impossible in those parts of the country. This is sad and got to stop.
Across Nigeria, there has also been a high incidence of buildings which collapse after years of construction as a result of town planning and environmental laws being flouted or completely disregarded in some instances. Our timber industry also suffers from indiscriminate felling of trees which would have also helped to cushion and control the effects of erosion.
We are also facing the danger of desertification in relatively dry land regions which are increasingly becoming arid if the right actions are not taken.
For those who are wondering what the right actions which are to be taken, a Buhari/Osinbajo led government has the answers already. The following are plans of the CHANGE agents for Nigeria’s environment. Never before have we had such great plans for our environment. Here are some of the plans for the nation’s environment:
• Ensure compliance with policies and measures to halt the pollution of rivers and waterways in the Niger Delta and the other parts of the country
• Create shelter belts in states bordering the Sahara Desert to mitigate and reverse the effects of the expanding desert
• Support and accelerate the implementation of regional water transport initiatives across the country through effective dredging of the main waterways
• Adopt a holistic approach to erosion and shoreline protection across the country;
• Create teams of volunteers to plant and nurture economically viable trees in arid regions
• Restructure the Ecological Fund Office to enable it meet today’s environmental challenges
• Regulate the timber industry to ensure that double the number of trees felled are planted by the loggers
• Ensure full compliance with town planning and environmental laws and edicts.

CALL TO ACTION:
1.) Would you love to see all forms of agriculture come alive once again in the Niger Delta region?
2.) Do you now realize that the high incidence of collapsed buildings can be attributed to the corruption and inefficiency of some government agencies that have refused to do the right thing?
3.) Talk to as many people as you can about General Buhari’s plan for our environment.
