A former Chief of Defence Staff, General Alani Akinrinade, says the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan by the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, is wrong.

He said while members of the organisation might have their political leanings, it was wrong for some Yoruba leaders to use the platform to canvass for votes for a particular candidate.

Akinrinade, who was a Chief of Army Staff before becoming a CDS, told our correspondent in an interview on Tuesday that the meeting of the Yoruba Assembly, which holds in Ibadan on Thursday, would sensitise people of the South-West on what to do at the forthcoming elections.

He said the Yoruba agenda brought before the National Conference failed.

The general also faulted the pro-Jonathan Yoruba leaders who said that the implementation of the report would benefit the people.

He noted that the recommendations of the confab were below Yoruba’s target and wondered why the leaders would base their endorsement on that.

He said, “When the Yoruba sent their delegates, the cardinal points that can make a federation were practically not given to us. I can assure you, we missed all the targets. It will be preposterous of us now to expect that by the time that report is executed, we will end up with true federalism.

“We want to set the record straight that there are major things that have to be done before we can have a true federalism. It cannot be done by one President alone. Unless you change the rule now, you will need all the national and state assemblies to agree with you.”

He said Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, who has been holding several post-confab conferences, was only pushing the agenda of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said, “By the look of things, it appears that they (Afenifere) were set up principally to canvass votes for Jonathan so that he might execute all the decisions reached at the last national confab.

“The argument was that he (Jonathan) was the one who convened the confab and that is the reason why he should go back there and execute the report of the confab.

“Obviously, it is being led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko and he is a PDP man. The kind of things that came out as the outcome (of their meetings) is an orchestration. You endorsed in a multi-party state and you’re expecting Yoruba to endorse one man in a party. That seems to be the purpose.”

Akinrinade wondered why Jonathan had not implemented at least one of the recommendations of the confab over six months after the conference was held and yet the issue was being used to drum support for the President.

The Afenifere are intellectuals, Now you don't expect intellectuals to endorse an illiterate, do you...

Furthermore, Not all Yorubas want to be under the Fulani hegemony and the Tinubu dynasty, How can one be calling the slave masters to come back?...live with it, Some Igbos(... Though few) are going to vote Buhari, So goes for Yorubas, Not everyone has the crowd mentality.

Jonathan Ni, Sai Jonathan, Jonathan Ka anyi ge so.

Afenifere unfortunately sold out. Jonathan effusively soaked the formerly respected body with dollars, even when Nigeria is grappling with an income cut in half by fallling oil prices. It amazes me how people believe Jonathan who lacked the capacity to manage Nigeria during a period of prosperity, can perform during a period of lack especially when he doesn't have to be accountable to the people since he will not be running for re-election.

Vote for Change.

Upon reading this, GEJ must start wondering why all the millions of dollars he has been showering on SW leaders of various groups would appear to be unraveling as the election draws nearer.

The answer is, it is just not possible to buy everybody in a region like the SW, and even if you were to buy all the leaders of a region, that does not mean you would get automatic support from the ordinary people of the region.

And now that many SW leaders like gen. Akinrinade are coming out to publicly denounce the endorsement of GEJ by some SW leaders, would GEJ return to the region once again and try to silence them with his 'dollar power', which he so much trusts to do the magic for him?

Jonathan has always been a very insincere man with Swesteners.....that is the reason he is more comfortable moving with the type of people he moves with in SW.....

Afenifere doesn't have political or moral justification to endorse candidacy of GEJ. SW today is undoubtedly an APC region going by the heartbeat of the SWners. On moral ground, if I need to be raw, how can you drum up support for a foreigner when a son of the soil is also in the race. If truly Afenifere is all about Yoruba nation, a GEJ who has neglected SW in the past 6yrs shouldn't be an option.

Igbos are resilient. wherever the tide turns we go there. If they don't build schools, we make money from it. if they don't stabilize power, we import generators for them. we are not pro anything we are pro peace and stability.

Akinrinade has just spoken the minds of some of us.

We have been saying that the basis given by some yoruba "elders" to support GEj is just a case of using Confab as an excuse to collect DOLLARS!!

The confab report did not meet the Yoruba nation's target. Before you quote me, read the report!

And even if it did, how has GEJ failed to influence the NASS to pass the all important PIB? How can the same GEJ influence the NASS approval and eventual implementation of the Confab report?? LOOOOLLLLL!

These are simple facts we all know. Let them just collect dollars and look for a better excuse. Meanwhile, they will come back one by one to disown GEJ!! grin grin grin grin

And this is what they keep selling to the people of SW about Yoruba agenda which has failed woefully from the emboldened parts

Why do this so called leaders deceiving themselves and not the vibrant SW.
Just like OPC because of the massive pipeline protection contract it will get this administration it blindly support this government saying it is the best thing for the Yoruba race. While common sense shows in the negative.
