holuwajobar: Really funny. But Agric is a good course. Most other courses blow faster than doctors. 5years post graduation and many courses are stable. 5 years post graduation for doctors and they are just 1 year post NYSC. It's hard being a medical doctor. Very hard and harsh. |

sgtponzihater: Mr Ponzi Hater, it clearly shows that you are ill-informed or an outright illiterate in the field of Dentistry. Dental and medical students study the same courses up to part 4 and in some schools part 5. Dental surgeons know more than 80% of what medical doctors do know . Medical doctors know nothing about Dentistry. Dentistry is a broad specialty with many subspecialties under it. They ear the same salaries (CONMESS) and in abroad dentists earn more. You are very wrong that Medicine is for the smartest. In OAU, a number of dental students have won first prices in Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology in preclinical classes where medical students are despite the fact that dental students offer more courses. To me, they are medical doctors, but dentists as specialists just like gynaecologist, urologists, neurologists etc. Mr Ponzi, try to explore and be more exposed. 6 Likes |

puremind1: Stop saying thrash here. I am sell more informed than you. While dentist know a lot about the Basic medical sciences they veer off in the clinical sciences. And it is actually the clinical sciences that makes a physician. If not Anatomy and physiology graduate would have claimed same knowledge with doctors. Rubbish! and money is not everything. 1 Like |

medicine(o & g, family medicine, paediatrics, surgery, orthopaedics and the likes) is more lucrative in Naija compared to dentistry. A visit to any of these departments on their clinic days will butress my point. Less attention is given to oral care in Naija except in exceptional cases where patients have no choice.. I have seen people who have not done basic S&P (scaling and polishing) in years and this procedure cost less than 3k in govt owned hospitals. So dear OP, the choice is yours. 2 Likes |

datfreshdoc:An Optometrist is not a Medical Doctor, yes he has the Dr in his name but his curriculum and the scope of his work does not qualify him as a Medical Doctor and neither are they members of the NMA..the equivalent of a Dentist in the Eye specialist area is an Ophthalmologist which like Dentistry is a Surgical department in Medicine.. 2 Likes |

aluko360: U say the truth. Saying a dentist knows as much as a medical doctor/physician is everything wrong with Nigerian practice. If a dentist in Nigeria doesn't get a government job he is nearly doomed and dentist don't earn more than doctors any where abroad. While there is a public outcry for more doctors the world over there is non such cry for dentist. Dubai medical council will be in Nigeria today to sweep as many physicians as they can. Most dentist end up having identity crisis or even frankly becoming quacks and pretending to be doctors. 1 Like |

The worst I saw was a non-graduate doing scaling and polishing and tooth extraction for his uncles clinic. I knew Nigeria is finished. These shouldn't be. |

sgtponzihater:Like I said earlier, you don't know anything about a Dental Surgery curriculum and should stop making categorical statements on what you are not sure of.. Dental Students do Basic Medical Sciences same as their General Medical colleagues AND also Pathology and Pharmacology, same as their Medical colleagues in 400L. AND A FULL SESSION of MEDICINE AND SURGERY in their 500L, during which he does rotational postings in various departments of Medicine and Surgery,as part of their general clinical studies and only concentrates on core Dental Courses in their final year.. I should know,I am a Dentist.. 8 Likes |

My dentist charged me more for every single appointment than both my surgeries combined that's all I know. Cost me over 400 euro over a 2 week period the last year just to get my wisdom tooth cleaned, ground back and filled. The filling has now come off and I need to book another appointment. If I could go back to college I want to be a dentist 10 Likes |

Ponzihater is the dumbest here followed closely by aluko360. How can you pple be arguing over something you know little or nothing about? Haba! Your level of ignorance is too high. Chai! *both are medical doctors. Only that dentistry is more of surgery than prescribing drug though they do where it's necessary *dentistry more demanding and tasking in medical school because of more courses they offer in addition to common courses they offer with those studying medicine *same salary scale in Nigeria Dentist paid higher in most developed countries of the world *both are treated and respected the same way *dentists have more potential to earn more money than those that studied medicine *Both are under the same umbrella of medical and dental council of Nigeria and NMA with the same identity card generated by the same association *Same method of renewing and getting practising license Any of them can be head of the hospital as CMD Both can go on to specialize and earn same salary and allowance The choice is yours. Thanks 2 Likes |

sgtponzihater:No,you should shut your trap and stop exposing your ignorance..Yes I did a Professional exam in Medicine and Surgery, what did you think..After a full year of Medicine and Surgery you won't write an exam on it? Paediatrics and OnG are specialist Courses not under the purview of Dentistry except for Paediatric Dentistry and I thought you were comparing Dentistry to Basic Medical Sciences.. Medicine maybe the gold standard but you certainly don't know anything about Dentistry and should stop making pronouncements on what you obviously know nothing about.. 7 Likes |

Go for dentistry. Its less stressful, more money. We don't have enough Drs practicing in Nigeria, but we have even fewer dentists. All those saying people don't care about their dental health, please wait for them to have a tooth ache, and they will testify that it's "strong meat that is called nama". 4 Likes |

Oraculus: OP As you can see, the current medical and dental council of Nigeria registrar studied dentistry (the only body that regulates the medical and dental practice in Nigeria and it is also the only body that issues license to any doctor) whether you are a gynecologist, neurologist, cardiologist or dental surgeons or whatever . Many dentists have been the CMD and CMAC of teaching hospitals here in Nigeria and abroad THE CHOICE IS YOURS 2 Likes |

ElPhoche: Stop displaying your despicable and abysmal level of ignorance. This is a public forum. Who told you it's only oral cavity dental surgeons studied? I am a dental surgeon. My part 5 bed side exam was a DM patient of which I was expected to know everything about diabetes ranging from clerking, features, signs and symptoms diagnosis, complications and management during medicine and surgery exam with those that were studying medicine under the same exam conditions and pass mark. No part of your body is in isolation. Different parts of body work together as a system. That is why you must know everything as a doctor If anything is wrong with a part of your system, manifestations may be on a distant site. Dentists are complete doctor just like those that studied medicine 11 Likes |

eniolaamoda: Don't mind DAT kid. He is quite ignorant. When someone says I am a doctor ur mind goes to MBBS because a dentist doesnt save any life. Dentist are best dental surgeon or to make them look dignified oral physicians. When u say physician or medical doctor it's strictly MBBS and knowing 80% of what a medical doctor knows is pure trash. |

The cache is wider in medicine even after specialization but if you don't want too much wahala and money, go dentistry especially if you are aspiring to be a housewife. Scaling, filling, extraction and moulding denture will provide enough for your womanly needs. |
Re: Is Dentistry Better Than Medicine by DokitaDave(m): 8:37pm On Apr 08, 2017 |
sgtponzihater: Well, I think the problem here is ignorance coupled with the zero will to learn. Since you can insist a Dentist isn't a doctor, then, you obviously ain't willing to learn. Is an Opthamologist a doctor? Is a Gynaecologist a doctor? Can we call a Neurosurgeon a doctor? Can we say an Oral and Maxilofacial surgeon is a doctor? Infact, who is a doctor? I think we should start from there. If you take off the mindset to attack and patiently research on those questions and answer them accurately, then, I think you should be fine. 3 Likes 1 Share |
