Dammytrager:
Medicine and Law are overrated course in Nigeria, If an Engineer should blow in Nigeria No Doctor can stand him, so ah think Electrical Electronics Engineering should top the list

The OP is still referring to the Nigeria of before where MBBS was the trend. Today the prestige that comes with Medicine is no longer there.
I would choose Computer Engineering over Medicine any time any day.

Also, Law has lost its value too because it has been 'commonized' and 'commodised'...too many lawyers around.

from my own point of view elect/elect and law should not be on that list. (before someone tries to counter my opinion, note that i studied elect/elect, my father studied elect/elect, 3 of my uncles studied elect/elect so i know virtually almost every thing about this field, here in nigeria there are not much jobs for engineers, but if you have plans of travelling to work abroad after your studies then you can study any engineering course or if you have very strong connections that can get you into the oil and gas sector then go for engineering if not choose otherwise.)

This should be the top 5.

1) Medicine : After completion of ur mbbs employment is automatic and salary starts at around 160,000 for government hospitals and not less than 120,000 for private(you start your life quickly).

2) Pharmacy : Employment is automatic because they are few in number and they are widely needed in every community and work hand in hand with doctors . During the compulsory 1 year internship they earn well more than 120,000 not to talk of after graduation.

3) Med lab : the same conditions that apply to pharmacy and medicine apply also to this , just that they are less respected than their pharmacy and doctor friends.

4) computer science/engineering : this field is one of the widest fields ever they are needed in any organisation/office building making use of computers.
with further training you can work as an ethical hacker, network admin, network engineer, server admin , microsoft sql admin,it support staff , software developer e.t.c in fact they are needed in any organization that makes use of computers.
The only disadvantage of this course is the number of people studying it here in nigeria are just too much, the way cs is going right now i believe it would soon be converted to a college of its own.

theres no number 5, because i believe the remaining courses are not worth studying because of too much competition for very little jobs.
but if i were to pick a no 5 i would pick accounting because thier jobs are virtualy everywhere, look around your environment you would find banks, and small/medium co-operate businesses all these organisations need accountants.

look around you would hardly find an unemployed doctor or pharmacists. but you would find many unemployed engineers, lawyers accountants and all others.
employment in Med. Lab is damn so not automatic

this write-up is biased. tho of course everyone k own that Medicine is no. 1. I think Law should be no.2. that aside, as regards the number of doctors exceeding patients that's not true even if it's just an exaggeration. come to school and see the number of allied medicals who couldn't get into medicine and you'd know that we can't have enough doctors. statistically the ratio of doctor:patient is quite low in Africa too. I'm happy to be a part of this prestigious profession...

Law?

With the unemployed barristers clogging CAC offices looking for ways to make ends meet?

As prestigious as Law is, There are too many Lawyers being dolled out every year these days making the Labour market highly competitive.

Some lawyers attached to chambers earn between 30-80k per month.

Go to the banks, many of them are becoming Corporate Lawyers.
If the leaders of 2mrw are asked to signify, I'm very sure u would follow suit! Except d medical courses and notably Medicine, every course in Nigeria has this problem. Policies to regulate d number of lawyers chunned out by our Unis. is stil being formulated. Just wait and relax... I'm sure in sm years' time u'll advice ur child to study law. I av no regret studying law whatsoever, 'everything in life isn't rili abt money.' Do u doubt that? Ask Dora Akunyili!

Not all wanted Medicine so put on your thinking cap, get down your high hosre and erase the mentality that allied medical students are such that couldn't get medicine in the first instance. So dumb a reasoning.

ah! the OP says 5 most "praised "courses many comments I read are referring to "
best" courses . if your course of study is on the list, it doesent mean its not among the best , it just means it is not praise....just thinking though.

chairman, calm down oh!
What he said is 95% a truism. They had to change their course as a result of the high cutoff for mbbs. Those that didnt change were compensated with allied medicals.
Just a select few wanted the allied medicals from the outset.
