As part of plans to arrest APC leaders on the eve of elections, the police today (Friday) in Kaduna asked Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and two other APC bigwigs to report in their offices. Summoned to appear along with El-Rufai are Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi and Lawal Samaila Yakawada.

El-Rufai is the APC candidate for governor of Kaduna state. Hunkuyi, is the senatorial candidate for Kaduna North and chairman of the APC Kaduna state campaign council. Yakawada, who was secretary to the state government in the Patrick Yakowa government, is a senior member of the APC campaign council. All three were invited by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the CID.

Samuel Aruwan, spokesman of the campaign council, disclosed that the police followed up the written invitation with phone calls. The intent behind requesting three top leaders of the APC to report on Friday, 27 March 2015, a day to the presidential election, is obvious.

Enquiries indicated that the pretext the police are employing is a petition about destruction of billboards in Zaria, an act for which the APC has been the victim. The APC notes that this is part of a campaign to frame criminal charges on the opposition for actions for which it has already been victimized.

Dr Yusuf Dankofa an Associate Professor of Law,who also doubles as counsel to the APC, has indeed notified the police that there is an ongoing court action against the police on the events in Zaria, at the Federal High Court, Kaduna judicial division in suit no FHC/KD/CS/48/2015. In a letter to the commissioner of police, Prof.Dankofa informed them that the pendency of the case prevents the police from taking any action in connection with the matter, as that will not only amount to an act of sub judice, but will also translate to a total disregard for justice and a further desecration of the hallowed majesty of our courts. In view of this fact that the above mentioned people’s application is before the court, the matter has been further adjourned to the 29th of April 2015 for further arguments and with this the court has been seized of this matter.

‘The police department in Kaduna State is therefore legally bound to conform with the rule of law, and should refuse to take any action that will portray them as anti- procedure because the law imposes on them an obligation to await the outcome of any litigation where they have been sued. In this case the police is part of the respondents and our solicitors are ready to take them up should they want to toe the path of disobedience. We hope they wouldn’t’,the spokesman said.

Sokoto state Command of Department of State Security (DSS) has allegedly detained three chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Those arrested include Alhaji Mu’azu Zabira who is the chairman of APC’s Security Committee and Alhaji Bashir Mara Gwuiwa, both arrested on Wednesday.

In a related development, the DSS was also said to have raided the house of another APC chieftain, Alhaji Umarun Kwabo on Wednesday during which one Alhaji Abubakar Kaini was arrested.

The APC acting chairman in the state, Alhaji Isman Sulaiman told news men that the arrest was one of PDP’s strategies to use force in order to seize power in the state.

While saying that efforts were being made to secure their release before the election, Suleiman also said that offenses of the detained politicians were not known.

The PDP state Secretary, Alhaji Kabiru Aliyu who responded to journalists’ inquiries said that the arrests should long have been carried following the APC chieftains’ alleged involvement in criminal activities in the state.

He however denied the allegation that the PDP had hand in the arrests. “If the arrests were the handiwork of PDP, only the APC leaders like Wamakko and Waziri would have been arrested and not minor and notorious criminals.

“Maragwiwa has a pending murder case in court. Zabira has been sponsoring criminal activities in the state. It is timely that security agencies are making necessary efforts to ensure the arrest of criminals in our state,” Kabiru alleged.

Responding to telephone inquiries, the DSS Director, Abubakar Bubuche said that he was not aware of the arrests.

Also, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) El-Mustapha Sani said that the Police had no hand in the arrests.

Meanwhile, Justice Rilwanu Aikawa of the Sokoto Federal High Court has restrained the EFCC, ICPC, the Police and the NIA from arresting Sokoto state government officials in relation to investigation in alleged cases of appropriation, disbursement and administration of monies appropriated between 2008 and 2014.
