Only 20% of Kano teachers qualified

Kano State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Musa Salihu has expressed dismay that only 20 percent of the state’s primary school teachers have the requisite qualification to teach at that level.

Salihu, who said this during the inauguration of the reconstituted 14-man State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), said the trend posed a challenge to the sector.

He said the state government had resolved to pursue the provision of quality education and ensure increased access to girl-child education to address the problem, adding that it made huge investment in the construction of new classrooms, rehabilitation of existing buildings, provision of classroom furniture and teaching materials within its five and half years of existence.

He added that the state had also invested in the training and retraining of teachers and was in the forefront of the implementation of welfare packages for teachers.

Salihu commended the local government council leaders for the provision and improvement of facilities in primary schools within their respective domains.

He charged the reconstituted members to intensify their inspection and monitoring exercise to ensure an improved education delivery and organise programmes to improve the quality of teachers in the state.

He advised them to use a substantial percentage of their Capital Development Funds to meet the needs of selected schools, in the area of rehabilitation of existing structures and provision of sufficient classrooms, to avoid congestion.

The commissioner also tasked members of the committee to ensure financial discipline and observe due process in all their transactions, and encourage private sector participation in the development of schools and assured them of the Ministry of Education’s support.

Judging from the quality of the personalities in the board, Salihu expressed confidence that all would be well with the Basic Education sub-sector in the state, adding that the board came at a time when the education sector was facing myriad of challenges.

I'm surprised they have up to 20% qualified teachers. The North is doing very well if this is true because it used to be 3% during the military rule.

Well, do we have information on the percentage of teachers in the south that are qualified? Last I checked, the stink in the Education System is a national problem.
