10 Characteristics of an Entrepreneur This is a list of 10 signs that scream out that you should cut your employer and venture out on your own. However, before you read these steps and even before you go and quit your job, make sure you are prepared. Consider what business you want to get into. Find out if you signed any non-compete clauses that might hurt your current relationship with your current employment. Most importantly, create a business plan that will outline what you want to spend on marketing, how much you will need in funding, and how many employees you need to work for you. Once you complete these tasks then you will see whether or not if you are prepared to become an entrepreneur or not. However, these 10 signs might answer that question before your planning results do. 1.) Work Flexibility You are tired of waking up early every morning after sleeping very late becuase you were up all night doing work. Guess what, this is going to happen when you are self-employed. However, you will be on your own schedule, on your own pace, making your own decisions. In that sense, you will definitely be a lot more flexible then you would have been working for someone else. 2.) Creative Control I can’t tell you how many times my ideas where shot down for no reason. I am sure you feel the same way and wonder how it would be if at least one of your ideas was not only taken into consideration, but implemented. We will only learn from our mistakes if we are allowed to make them. As an entrepreneur, you will definitely make some mistakes. However, it is important to learn from them and not make mistakes made by your current or past employer(s). 3.) Your Passion Makes You Dominate I’m not suggesting you are a bully, but you definitely have a dominant personality because of your passion for your job. Many people do not share that same passion that you may even though they might be getting paid higher than you. It is unfortunate, but that is why being self- employed is something for you. You are passionate unlike anyone else in your office and because of that you may speak up more and take things to the heart unlike the rest. You don’t have to sit around and be told “no” to all your ideas and concerns by people who don’t care about the business or product like you do. 4.) You Listen to Others You might have a dominant personality and be overly passionate, but to be a successful entrepreneur you must listen to others around you. Their opinions matter the same way yours did when you weren’t self-employed. Don’t be a hypocrite and close off your ears to the people around you. Listen and absorb. 5.) Trust is a Non-Issue For You Trusting someone is difficult. Trusting people that work for you or with you is even more difficult. We are animals in nature and want to make sure that no one ever takes our territory. However, even some animals can get along in the jungle because they all play a different part. An alligator will dominate the water while the lion takes control of the land. Trust others around you to take care of your business or product from some angle because there are going to be days when you might miss something or times when you may make a huge mistake. 6.)You Have Discipline You never hit the snooze button a 100 times in the morning. You wake up and get ready for your job. You follow your routines and make sure you don’t fall into bad habits. You work very hard at work and don’t need others to help make you start working. If you are disciplined like a samurai warrior then you have one of the biggest and most important character traits that every successful entrepreneur has. 7.) You Know the Differences Between Work and Play I can’t tell you how important this is. If you are a party animal who does not take work seriously then please, by all means keep your day job. However, if you know how to say no to a night of excessive drinking, spending, or game-playing then you may be more prepared for self-employment. I’m not saying you won’t have fun in your life as an entrepreneur, but in the beginning do not expect to be energized enough to even play. 8.) Public Speaking is Not a Problem For You You are going to be your company/ product’s marketer and salesman. How can you sell your product or services without having the ability to speak in front of people. You may make presentations in front of potential clients. If you are afraid to talk in front of strangers then consider taking some classes on communicating in front of others and practice your craft before becoming self-employed. 9.) You are Always Motivated You will be turned down a lot by plenty of people in your life. Whether it be a potential customer, potential spouse, friend, family member, etc. However, when these things happen you stay motivated and never give up. That is the type of personality that an entrepreneur and self-employed individual has. However, if small things hurt you and throw your motivation and drive off-course then you may want to strengthen up first. 10.) You Want to Make a Difference Entrepreneurs go out on their own for two reasons; to make a lot of money, to make a big difference in the world. If you are the type of person that wants to do both then you need to consider self-employment as a real possibility. Personally, I would like to create my own legacy and become somewhat “famous” in my industry. I feel that will bring me the success that I want and please. If you feel the same, then you have just as much as that entrepreneurial spirit as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett, etc. did. If you want to be an entrepreneur then go for it, but make sure you are prepared, poised, and driven about the business you want to start. Not everything may work on day one and things might go south very quick, but make sure to never give up.
