The US and Russia have announced a breakthrough agreement on Syria that foresees a nationwide ceasefire starting early next week. The ceasefire will be followed by an unlikely new military partnership between the rival governments targeting Islamic State and al Qaida. At a joint news conference after a marathon day of negotiations, US secretary of state John Kerry said the plan can reduce violence in Syria and lead to a long-sought political transition, ending more than five years of bloodshed. He called the deal a potential "turning point" in the conflict, if implemented by Syria's Russian- backed government and US-supported rebel groups. The ceasefire begins at sundown Monday, Mr Kerry said, coinciding with the Muslim Eid al- Adha holiday. "Today the United States and Russia are announcing a plan which we hope will reduce violence, ease suffering and resume movement toward a negotiated peace and a political transition in Syria," Mr Kerry said. "We are announcing an arrangement that we think has the capability of sticking, but it is dependent on people's choices." "It has the ability to stick, provided the regime and the opposition both meet their obligations, which we - and we expect other supporting countries - will strongly encourage them to do," he added. Mr Kerry's negotiating partner, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, confirmed the agreement and said it could help expand the counter terrorism fight and aid deliveries to Syrian civilians under UN auspices that have been stalled for weeks. "This is just the beginning of our new relations," Mr Lavrov said. He said Syrian President Bashar Assad's government was informed of the accord, and was prepared to comply. Mr Kerry added: "The United States is going the extra mile here because we believe that Russia, and my colleague, have the capability to press the Assad regime to stop this conflict and to come to the table and make peace." Mr Kerry outlined several steps the government and rebels would have to take. They must now pull back from demilitarised zones, and allow civilian traffic and humanitarian deliveries - notably into the divided city of Aleppo where as many as 500,000 people have been killed in fighting. "If Aleppo is at peace, we believe that the prospects for a diplomatic solution will brighten," he said. "If Aleppo continues to be torn apart, the prospects for Syria and its people are grim." The deal ends months of frenetic diplomacy that included four meetings between Mr Kerry and Mr Lavrov since August 26. The arrangement hinges on Moscow pressuring Assad's government to halt all offensive operations against Syria's armed opposition and civilian areas. Washington must persuade "moderate" rebels to break ranks with the Nusra Front, al Qaida's Syria affiliate, and other extremist groups. Both sides have failed to deliver their ends of the bargain over several previous truces, but the new arrangement goes further by promising a new US-Russian counter-terrorism alliance, only a year after President Barack Obama chastised Russia for a military intervention that US officials said was mainly designed to keep Assad in power and target more moderate anti-Assad forces.

He called the deal a potential "turning point" in
the conflict, if implemented by Syria's Russian-

I don't trust both sides let's wait and see how long the truce will last.

PERILS OF SOFT SKINNED VEHICLES.

i was wondering about this a few days ago when a i saw a photo of a live encounter which was posted here.

the gunner is not in immediate danger because he is behind the gun shield , but what about the driver ?
in a frontal attack the driver is most vulnerable , and they also know it , i wonder at their courage .
it surely takes lots of guts.

respect to these drivers.

Makes me wonder why we have fully armed military personnels sometimes with government owned APCs providing VIP escort duties to civilians and corporate bodies.
The police needs to step up and take up small internal policing duties entirely

Even in developed countries they would not call the police, they will rather call the national guard in case of the United States.

Not sure about MOPL but STF have access to helicopters, APC, Boats in short any thing any special forces unit has access to they have access to. In the 70s and 80s there was Koevoet a police unit created to deal with heavily armed terrorists I don't see why Nigeria has not created a police unit to deal with theses guys.

Koevoet and yes they cops not miltary

They were also black Koevoet members? I thought the Koevoet was an all white special police unit?

Nope only the National serves and reserve force units where all white since those units where made up conscripts and only white people where conscripted. There where a lot of blacks in the Recces, Koevoet, Local SWA (Namibia) units, 32 battalion, the only branch that did not have non white solders in a combat role was the air force since all pilots where white. The first non white officer was in the late 80s I think 87 if I am not mistaken. The navy had ships with mixed crews no blacks but mine hunters had whites and coloured and strike crafts had Indian and white. Though since special forces deployed from strike craft and submaries that could mean a Navy ship could of had all races on board. It was all ways strange how the system built to defend racist government was the least racist part of it. I actually suspect that is why there was no civil war. A lot of the military command in the SADF would of delt with 32 battalion, 101 battalion, koevoet, Recces, Navy, extra extra. They would of had far more dealing with non whites than say some hard line racist group who never spoke with one beyond ordering him around like a dog,

There is a Chief petty officer(staff sgt) retiring where I work a black man who has been in the navy sine 1976

AS for koevoet they where 70% black or there about

UPDATE ON OPERATION GAMA AIKI – MNJTF
The effects of difficult terrains and unpredictable weather conditions continue to pose serious challenges to the conduct of Operation GAMA AIKI. However, despite these limitations for the ground forces, the Air Component of the operation, through successful combined air operations continue to deny the terrorists freedom of action and movement within the battle fields. Recent air strikes and simultaneous clearing operations on Twelve (12) identified Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) camps and hideouts have greatly shattered their cohesion.
2. Moreover, continuous blockade of the terrorists main supply routes and arrest of their logistics suppliers caused serious economic hardship and led to the surrender of many terrorists in different locations in the Area of Operation (AOO) of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). Additionally, the troops of Sector 4 in Diffa Niger Republic tracked and neutralized 4 x BHT suspected to have attacked the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp and Two (2) others were arrested at Tumoua village.
3. In another unfortunate development, the troops of Sector 4 while on clearing operation after successful air strikes at Baroua village, encountered Improvised Explosives Devices (IED) explosion. This incident led to the death of 2 personnel (1 x Officer and a soldier) and Six (6) soldiers were wounded. The deceased personnel were given befitting burial in Diffa and while the injured soldiers were evacuated to Niamey, Niger Republic for medical treatment. In spite of this unfortunate event, the morale and fighting spirit of the troops remain very high.

TROOPS CLEAR KIDNAPPERS DEN IN RIVERS STATE
As part of Exercise CROCODILE SMILE, troops of 2 Brigade Nigerian Army in an anti-cultism operation yesterday cleared a notorious kidnappers camp at Obiozumini near Obite in Ogbema/Ndoni/Egbema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The troops who were earlier ambushed engaged and subdued the kidnappers.
One kidnap victim was rescued from the camp. The ongoing operation would be sustained until criminality is subdued.
Similarly, the troops during raids, cordon and search operations as part of the training exercise, have also discovered and destroyed 52 illegal refineries and refinery cooking pots in Krakrama, Bille and Better land community general area.
The troops discovered 6 refining cooking pots at Better Land community which unfortunately could not be destroyed instantly because of proximity to the community.
They also recovered 2 high powered Engine boats, 10 empty drums and 1 pumping machine. Plans for destroying the illegal refinery with Swamp Buggy is in progress.
Thank your for your kind support and cooperation.

May of been there first op but they where created after a hostage situation at the Israeli embassy and there was no police team able to deal with it. In fact the Recces where called up to help. After that the police created there own recce type team.
