OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY: CAS COMMISSIONS NEW RUNWAY LIGHTS, ISR WORKSHOP AT NAF BASE KADUNA

Marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of aviation excellence, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar on the night of Friday, 14 June 2024, officially commissioned runway lights and state-of-the-art airfield facilities at the Kaduna Military Airfield. This major upgrade revolutionizes pilots' training practices, enhances safety protocols, and bolsters operational efficiency, thus signaling a new era in aviation standards in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). A day earlier, Air Marshal Abubakar had also commissioned the new Base Defence Coordination Centre as well as the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Workshop among other notable projects, signifying relentless dedication, unwavering commitment, and tireless efforts by the NAF to meet the defence and security needs of Nigeria.

In his remarks at the brief ceremony for the commissioning of the runway lights, the CAS expressed profound pride and joy at witnessing the airfield's transformation, despite previous attempts to modernize it. He highlighted the airfield's strategic importance, stating that the Kaduna Military Airfield, located within the NAF Base Kaduna, has been a major military stronghold since the Nigerian Civil War, hosting major operational units. According to the CAS, "the inauguration of the new facilities will help eliminate challenges experienced during night flying operations and flying in low-visibility conditions which hinder sortie rates and achievements of objectives." Speaking further, he noted that, "With these upgrades, the NAF will experience a significant boost in agility, enabling increased sortie rates and seamless day and night operations against adversaries. Moreover, our resilience will be enhanced, allowing us to quickly recover from adverse weather conditions and fulfill national security requirements more effectively, "he added.

The CAS also used the opportunity to assure Nigerians of a marked difference in the fight against terrorism and other forms of criminality in the Northwest and beyond. He also praised the dedication of NAF engineers, technicians, and support staff who worked tirelessly on the project and acknowledged the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's visionary leadership, which he said has inspired transformative advancements in the NAF and national development.

NIGERIAN ARMY TAKES DELIVERY OF ITS FIRST SET OF AIRCRAFTS...As Army Aviation becomes a reality

The Nigerian Army (NA) has taken a significant step in enhancing its operational capabilities with the delivery of the first batch of new aircrafts. The berthing of the aircrafts marks a significant milestone in the development of the Nigerian Army Aviation’s capacity to provide air support for ground operations. The aircraft BELL UH-1H (HUEY) helicopters, were formally received by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja in a brief ceremony held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Thursday 20 June, 2024.

Receiving the aircrafts, General Lagbaja, noted that the renewed drive to establish an NA Aviation wing was conceived by the then-former COAS, Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah (rtd), in 2014, with a three-phase ten-year implementation plan.

The COAS extolled former Chiefs of Army Staff, maintaining, that their tenacity and drive, along with the collective efforts of personnel and Nigerian Government’s political will, have been instrumental in realizing the fruition of NA Aviation.

Gen Lagbaja appreciated the various successive administrations for their support in training NA Pilots and Ground Crews as well as putting in place requisite structures. The COAS profoundly expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling his promise to fund the acquisition of NA platforms and providing all support to actualize the dream.

The BELL UH-1H Helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors and enablers to conduct a range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, rescue, logistics, transportation, and medical evacuation.

The Army Chief also appreciated the forerunners, particularly the sister services and the Nigerian Police Force Aviation wing, for their support and encouragement. He noted that the NA is spurred to serve the nation better with the acquisition of the new platforms and provide Nigerians, an enabling environment for economic prosperity.

In his remarks, the Coordinator, NA Aviation, Brigadier General Musa Alkali, stated that the arrival of the NA Aviation vanguard platforms is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capabilities of the NA Aviation, in line with the COAS’s Command Philosophy.

Brig Gen Alkali stressed that the acquisition of the platforms is a clear demonstration of the NA’s aviation resolve, which started 40 years ago to continuously improve and adapt in the face of an evolving security landscape, adding that this will boost the NA’s reconnaissance, surveillance, and air mobility capabilities. The Coordinator acknowledged the tireless efforts of those involved in the execution of the NA Aviation plan, as well as the international partners.

Earlier, a Consultant for the Nigerian Army Aviation, Major General Emeka Onwuamaegbu (retired) who is also a trained Helicopter Pilot, lauded the Nigerian Army for sustaining the vision over the years that saw to the actualization of the Nigerian Army aviation.

First of all, a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the Army for it's Air Corp. I'm truly elated for the force and Nigeria at large.

That said, I have a few questions and reservations:

1. Why the very old BELL UH-1? Why not the BELL 412 that's equally used by the NAF? In my opinion, that would ease training, interoperability, and maintenance.

2. Another concern are restrictions the Americans may place on the procured helos? If we fall out with the Americans, you know how they are. So why risk it?

3. Why don't we go for mid sized transport helos like the Mi-17 transport helos that can pack a decent amount of troops for air assaults

For me Also I don't really like the idea of the very old Bell UH-1 with two rotor blades, but the good thing is that we are starting from somewhere and more goodies to come.

Secondly the Russia Mi-35m/MIi-17 would have been the better procurement for the NA aviation, But has it stands now the sanctions on Russia has made it virtually impossible to buy hardwares from them. And I'll say for now we are in good terms with uncle Sam but over reliance on them might cause some future difficulties like weapon restrictions etc.

Thank God for emerging countries like China and Turkey who are developing faster in Air assets. We can always rely on this emerging friends.

Sentiments apart, what have they been able to do with BH/ISWAP ?
The NA/Armed forces has done alot, go ask people leaving in Borno and Yobe state especially. They will tell you what happened in the past and what's happening now and how they can sleep with their two eyes closed.

The just emerging security threat is the banditory, Fulani herbsmen clash & attack on communities and kidnapping in the N.W & N.C.
And also the IPOB thugs, kidnapping, Oil militants and other huligance like the Auto pilot/Unknown Gunmen has they call it. You want us to put the blame on the Army, what about the Nigerian police and the people of the communities living in that area.

Dude go and arrest, go sit your sorry ass some where.

NIGERIAN ARMY INTELLIGENCE SCHOOL STUDENTS EMBARK ON STUDY TOUR TO HEADQUARTERS WESTERN NAVAL COMMAND... Gain Insight on Naval Operations

In a bid to enhance the academic and professional competence of its students, the Nigerian Army Intelligence School (NAIS) has embarked on a local study tour to the Headquarters of the Western Naval Command (WNC) and the Joint Task Force South West Operation AWATSE. The tour was aimed to familiarize students with the critical role of the WNC and OP AWATSE in ensuring security in the South Western region of Nigeria, and to underscore the importance of inter-service collaboration.

The delegation, led by the Acting Commandant of NAIS, Brigadier General Kingsley Nwoko, comprised students from various courses including the Young Officers Course, Counter Intelligence Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Courses, Operative Intelligence Course, and Intermediate Intelligence Operative Course.

Upon arrival, the team was warmly received by the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral MB Hassan and briefed. The brief covered the history, activities, force structure, achievements and challenges of the operation, with a particular focus on intelligence operations. This was followed by a tour of key naval assets, including the NNS KADA, NNS EKUN, NNS CALABAR, and the Falcon Eye facility, providing students with a firsthand understanding of naval operations.

Rear Admiral Hassan expressed his pleasure in hosting the NAIS personnel, emphasizing the importance of such interactions in strengthening the collaboration within the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He highlighted the mutual benefits of sharing knowledge and operational experiences between the Army and Navy.

Brigadier General Nwoko, in his remarks, underscored the academic significance of the tour, noting that it aligns with the Chief of Army Staff's Command Philosophy. He emphasized that the tour is crucial for improving students' understanding of inter-service synergy and the effectiveness of military operations through actionable intelligence.

Your problem and pain was that he called "IPOB to come and see" right?

The truth of the matter is they'll have a taste of it if the killing of security personnel continue? And let me enlightening you on some issues on security.

BH/ISWAP & IPOB/ESN/BIAFRA agitation are two defferent entities. The government has been folding there arms and not wanting a military scale intervention in the east.

The problem we have in the SE and NW/NC should be handled by police and civil defence if they where properly trained and equipped, the military shouldn't be in those places in the 1st place.

The government is just trying to avert another civil war, the IPOB/ESN is never too big to be handled by the army.

AIR FORCE WAR COLLEGE PARTICIPANTS VISIT MOROCCO AND TÜRKIYE

As part of efforts to deepen understanding of global geopolitics and military-industrial dynamics, the Air Force War College (AFWC) recently undertook an international study tour to Türkiye and Morocco. The tour was majorly aimed at equipping the participants with a deeper understanding of the complexities of international politics, security, and the interdependence of modern nation-states. The overarching theme for the tour was "Military Industrial Complex and National Development: Lessons for Nigeria," with a focus on understanding the technological advancements and manufacturing capabilities of the armed forces in these countries. The participants also explored how these 2 nations have leveraged their military-industrial complexes to bolster their national development agendas.

According to the Commandant of the College, Air Vice Marshal Gabriel Kehinde, "The goal of the study tour was to provide our participants with a comprehensive understanding of the linkages between military capabilities, technological innovation, and economic progress. By examining the models adopted by Türkiye and Morocco, we aim to draw valuable lessons that can inform Nigeria's own path towards strengthening its defense industry and fostering sustainable national development." Upon their return to Nigeria, the participants presented their findings in both oral and written forms, highlighting the unique strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) observed in each country. These insights and lessons learnt will then be utilized to guide the Nigerian Air Force's (NAF) strategic planning and decision-making processes, as the Service seeks to optimize its own military-industrial capabilities.

The successful completion of the study tour underscores NAF’s commitment to fostering a highly informed and strategically minded officers’ corps, capable of addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing global security environment.

New acquisitions in the Mauritanian army include the WMA-301 assault gun, the MCAV-20, Dongfeng Mensghi armored vehicles equipped with TY-90 short-range defense system and many others.
