After a very long time here in the northeast.. I know what it feels to be without air support during an intense situation.

Came under multiple fire from multiple locations from different types of fire arms. We were taken by surprise with no idea of what's going on. We returned fire blindly just to suppress but it wasn't working. We requested for air support and they could not acertain the deployment status yet for an armed CAS. C2 opted for back up which will came around 40 minutes later and another 3-5 minutes later. Defensive position has been set up and once back up arrived, we launched a drone which eventually displayed our position but defensive strategies in place kept us safe as the idiots bullet keeps flying but standing up could lead to death.

I said my last prayers. Grabbed my piano, picked the radio and asked calmly, how many minutes more before we can get air support and they said, we already have a UAV on your position. Area has been identified and mrls is setting up for launch on BHT position. We maintained radio contact, took mrls about 15-25 minutes to fire but before then, the UAV team coordinated a suppressive fire on their position from us which gave us the chance to move back.

The terrain here is so bad that if you are not careful, an ambush by few men could lead to death of multiple soldiers. ISR counted 53 bht.

Saying my last prayers there doesn't mean I was ready to die there o. Never! If there was no air support, we were ready to draw fire but there's possibility of casualty or injured personnels.
pictures they say s worth more than thousand words. wink

Stay strong bro

If it takes 40 minutes plus to get Air support, then the army operations HQ should improve on artillery and MRLS fire support. 15 -25 minutes is too long.
Armed reconnaissance is a regular thing here in the northeast and its possible most of the jets can't respond immediately. MAINTENANCE, capability to take off immediately after a response etc.

The MRLS I heard had to move to a better position to hit the area.

Thank God for protection. My problem is how many BHT were killed in the process?

There is nothing as painful as hearing Nigerian army/Airforce killed 3 BHTs and 2 AK47 were recovered after reading your story.

17 casualties confirmed. Others were probably hit by the blast shrapnel.

Thank God for your life Sir!

The bolded is a capability I am grateful we have. It seems Regt personnel have some assets at their disposal, in fact it nearly makes the NA looks like it treats it's men disposable

Why do you guys not write/print your tales/books of service in the military like guys from US/UK? it's a goldmine if you ask me
Thank you! I don't think the military command is interested and if done, it will be well scrutinised.

Yes, but we've been cautioned to leave this to the appropriate authority who will give them out to the media.

It could be after service. The higher ups should chill abeg, its not like it is state secrets that are being written about. I feel if one or two retired Snr Officers starts it,it will reverberate around the entire Armed Forces

There is always a geographical map covering the whole N.E theatre, artillery & MRLS should be positioned/stationed to cover the whole area of operation.

Moving or positioning to a better place shows we are not well organised.

shocked

Reasons for better positioning;
-Input from Forward observers, hence the need to correct aim
-Higher probability of hit thus reducing the number of salvos to be fired in the general area
And many more those that spent/spend months training/retraining can tell you.
Its best to leave things we are not doing for daily bread to those who do it!

You're funny.. cool

All military formations on grounds like; F.O.B, border towns and check points are well known, except for patrols which actual location cant be determined in real time.

factors like reverse slopes, distance/range etc. Would have been determined if all these assets are well stationed considering all these factors.

You don't wait till your ground troops need fire support to stop enemy intrusion before positioning your artillery/rocket system. Range wind, air temperature, air density etc, might limit projectile accuracy in a geographical place at any time.

These is why our ground troops have to wait for 20-25 minutes before they get fire support and the airforce can't be there for every BHT attack.

localised metrological conditions can affect accuracy and performance of MBRL and artillery , so may need to move.

if targets r on reverse slope of natural impediments then no point wasting ammo by MBRL and artillery unless u want to use the psychological effect.so u need to move

There is minimum distance to which MBRL and artillery can fire. If targets r within less than minimum range of MBRL and artillery then the launcher needs to move further away inorder to bring the target to its minimum range.

And if targets r beyond maximum range the launcher will need to move towards target inorder to bring it into its max range.

Depending of payload u need to reposition the MBRL and artillery , for direct impact rounds it is preferable to use higher trajectory from higher grounds to get range benefit and max effect, for air burst ammo relatively flatter trajectory will also do. It varies on combination of ops requirements and ops conditions like terrain is it mountain side or flat area or desert etc

Then there is course correction, without fire control support ( or even with them ) like aerial reconnaissance or ground radars or forward fire control observers u may need to reposition more or less for fire correction. It basically like walking the fire to the target.

Are you doing all these when your ground troops need artellery/rocket support ...

Course correction & fire control, repositioning...while soldiers are taking heavy AAG fire from every direction.
