mmsen: This is one issue that can be argued from several points of view. The idea that the higher the population the lower the wealth per head a nation would have is a very simplistic view of how the world works. Several European countries and the USA, have tried to shore up their population (even though they target skilled labour) through different schemes such as Visa lotteries and the likes. Ireland is also a very good example of a country trying to shore up her population. Now, using China as a case study, the country with the largest world population, and at a time it did seem to make sense for them to try to limit their population. Now guess where that got them: They ended up with a rapidly aging society and shrinking labor force. What is China doing now China is trying to shore up her population by giving incentives to parents in order to encourage them to have a 2nd child. That's where china is today!!!. Now, Nigeria as a case study. Why is a large part of our population living below poverty line We are too many we are too corrupt we are too stupid. I would take the last 2. And the reason is simple: Check out the top 10 countries with the Highest world population: China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia, Japan. Now Check out the top 10 richest economies in 2014 : USA, China, Japan, Germany, France, UK, Brazil, Italy, Russia, India. Of these top 10, 6 of them have the world's largest population. If I were to consider the world's smallest nations, they would rank no where. Population is an advantage and should mean more wealth, but when a nation is as corrupt as we are, we can't be rich even if had Qatar's populaton with all our wealth, we would still be poor. Now talking as a Muslim, Allah says in Quran 17 verse 31: " And do not kill your children for fear of poverty: We give them sustenance and yourselves (too): surely to kill them is a great wrong.". This verse was revealed at a time the Arabs used to kill their male children for fear they would not be able to provide sustenance for them, Allah reminded them that it is He Allah who provides for them both |

JaaizTech: Thank you for your response, I see you put much thought into it. The Chinese were only able to lift hundreds of millions out of poverty once they had a sustainable level of population growth, a direct result of their one child policy. India, even with it's economic success is still mired in poverty because they have a ridiculously high rate of population growth, there are a greater proportion of people living in abject poverty in India than in Africa. Nigeria's population growth is unsustainable, in 1991 the population of Nigeria was comparable to that of Germany (88 million vs 80 million), now it is 170 million. There is no economy on this planet that provide amenities when the population expands as such a nonsensical rate - how is any government supposed to know what amenities to build when the growth rate is so dramatic and census figures so unreliable? You listed the 10 largest economies but in terms of wealth on individuals, China, Russia, India and Brazil pale in comparison to the nations with responsible population growth - nations like Germany and Japan are growing older but they are not growing poorer and they have the means to take care of their citizens. The fact the USA has a visa lottery is because of countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh where reckless breeding habits are tolerated which in turn makes it difficult for a government to govern effectively. Large numbers might attract commerce but dramatic population growth is not usually associated with economic prosperity. Nigeria is already large enough in population to be the largest in Africa and significant on a global setting but to have a population that doubles every 20 years is farcical - it is suggestive of a shambolic and backwards society. We should be asking what the 'carrying capacity' is of the environment that we inhabit and then attempting to tailor policy to ensure that the population does not grow at such a rate to destroy that which provides us with the means to sustain life. Without planning, how do you expect to have a successful society? You think that it is by providence that roads are built? Schools are built? Dams are built? Already we have Fulani herdsmen killing those on settled lands because they seek green pasture for their cattle, what will happen when the land is used up to take care of a larger population? Will they kill those that live on the estates that were built to house the burgeoning populace? Those that have an excessive amount of children display a mentality that can be best described as careless, with little regard for quality of life, the availability of resources. It is also a security risk to have so many young people appear into the job market at once - no economy expands at such a rate to accommodate the population growth that Nigeria has. Until population growth is lower Nigeria will continue to face the social ills that come about as a result of having so many frustrated idle minds. I don't know why anyone would apply the history of the Arabian desert to life in 21st century Africa. Boko Haram are the children of the Koranic verse that you quoted as it is quite clear that Allah does not provide for their needs. They would not resort to killing innocent civilians nor would they be able to recruit if there was a benevolent figure that took care of all beings. Nevertheless, we do not need to kill our babies in 2015, we have family planning and birth control measures - from condoms, to cups to the pill. Why not make use of information and knowledge? Why handicap oneself with an old book? |

JaaizTech: No one is canvassinf for a one child policy to be implemented in Nigeria... They point stands that if you are a poor nation and your rate of population increase is greater than the rate of economic growth you will remain a poor country its simple math. If Nigerian men could only be sensible and have a moderate number of children lets say 2-4 all would be well. But no Greed and lust is what rules the black man so he has to take 4 wives and have 20 children and have no way of caring for them. |

tsdarkside:A girl hitting puberty does not make her emotionally, physically and mentally mature enough to face the pains and gains of marriage. How will you subject a 9-14 year old girl who hasn't abandoned her baby dolls or learnt to wash her pant properly to something she doesn't fully understand Marriage is between two mature and consenting adults. I'm ashamed you reason this way. 1 Like |

Op, why did you later change it from 'concubines' to 'wives'? You were partially right. He actually has 1 wife and 2 concubines. The first wife is the real and only wife. The others are not her mates in 'class'. Infact, what you have there is no longer a marriage but a domestic partnership. That's what happens when greed moves a man to bring in a second and third wife into his matrimonial home. You think the wife is happy about? It's disrespectful but the women are brainwashed to believe otherwise. |
