One Lagos Is The Answer by sojimade(m): 9:21am On Apr 08, 2015 |
The late Sardauna Sir Ahmadu Bello once said the Igbos have a domineering tendency, that if you put them in labourers camp they will want to emerge as the headman of that camp. I discarded his opinions then, thinking he's one of the leaders trying to divide Nigeria along ethnic lines. Shortly after he made the statement, he was murdered in the 1966 coup by an Igbo man. With the recent happenings in Lagos, I'm forced to reassess my position on the statement he made. Now I believe he has enough reasons to say so. Before I proceed, I would like to say here that I'm not being tribalistic either, my neighbours are Igbo and we have a strong mutual respect for each other. And I can never support raising arms on them to inflict injuries on them or rob them of their lifes. But yet....the scores have to be settled. Before the advent of colonial masters, Lagos has been in existence with an Oba administering their affairs. Taking a critical look at their culture, way of life and mode of dressing it is not far from neighboring kingdoms in Oyo, Ogun and Ondo states. Looking at her geographical location too, Lagos is surrounded by Yoruba states, the lagoon and Yoruba speaking tribe in Benin Republic. The influx of Europeans into Lagos in the 1800s made it a beehive of economic activities and vital location In their inglorious slave trading business. When Nigeria got her independence in 1960, it is no doubt that she's the most developed city in Nigeria and consequently became the Federal Seat. These factors saw other tribes migrating into Lagos in a quest for greener pasture. It now looks as if the Igbos in Lagos have gotten their greener pasture and they are so full that they feel the next thing they can do to gain satisfaction is to chase out their host and assume control over them. I should also point out at t his juncture that I have strong reservations for what the Oba said, but being the Yoruba boy that I am, I will never support that the Oba retract his statement. An Oba gives orders, he doesn't opine. It also on this juncture that I urge Igbos in Lagos to desist from navigating the political terrain of that state, they should face the business they've come to do. And if the political ingenuity in them wouldn't let them rest, their villages are their for them to display their political talent. Let's give mutual respect to each other and know our boundaries. What WAR can do, PEACE can do better. We've come too long to split up now. One Nigeria is the Answer. 1 Like |

This is well-said. You are welcome to live and do business in Lagos Nigeria but we don't and will never share our heritage with you! We don't care for your land either! |

That is exactly what we want you to learn. A human being should be able to retract his statement ..that is the position of ndi Igbo. |
