Thanks guys for the contributions but basically what I am seeing here are two school of thoughts, people who see a car as luxury and those who see it as a necessity

Some peeps view jumping from keke to danfo, danfo to okada, fighting with conductor and so on as a way of life

isn't investing in ur life, comfort, and so on part of an investment??

Don't know about where you are talking about but here in lagos to enter transport to work cost approximately 500 but to fuel a car I will spend 1500 a day (residents of iyanoba to orile lagos can attest to this) So tell me, if I earn 100k and spending 1500×5, you tell me how much it is, the truth should be said, for a guy at his age and status car is a luxury to him, why not he saves that money or invest and when he can earn 150 or even 200 then he is good to afford such luxury

What you are saying doesn't still correlate. I have a neighbor who works with a bank branch at Apapa and lives at ikoyi, we all know how that apapa is and the traffic madness. Prior to that, he was using the first generation rav4 when it didn't pay him, he sold it and bought a brand new kia picanto. What did he do, he cut his cloth according to his size.

You know the area where you are living and you can measure the time used in traffic all the intending car buyer has to do is factor this in and get something good on gas picanto, micra, yaris have a robust fuel economy.

Bros I know but 1500 is loke 17litres haba, except you are in holdup for close to 3hrs with AC. The op as if 100k salary a month can maintain a car and you were against it. I still maintain my stand that 100k earner can.

Op my sister was also in this same dilemma as yours, though not a salary earner but during her houseman ship, she was paid a huge sum of money and her thought was to buy a car and her work place was so close that with heavy traffic it was just 30mins drive and she seldom encounter such. If you are a man, once you buy the car, be ready to foot a lot of bills in the house no be boy dey buy car nah man o.

Investment I don't understand this they said u shud buy land, hope you know how much it cost to buy land in lagos (they may say land plenty for Ikorodu) ok without 2m you can't build a single room with adequate security now after building house at ikorodu, if u don't want to die young u need a car to make transportation easy from that far away investment to civilization.

These guys will en up confusing you the more bro, I bought my first car when I was earning less than 20k monthly and I maintained it well till I sold it off and got my second car a Legend with 3.5L V6 and yet I was making less than 30k a month. The truth is that if you get a good toks all you have to do for the next 12 months is fueling and servicing, once its 12 months plus sell it off and add little amount to upgrade to an even better car.
my friend's younger brother is on a 15k a month salary and still drives a clean golf4, someone with 100k a month salary should be able to maintain any of 2002 - 2004 models, its not like toks break down on a weekly or monthly basis.
I drives Audi A6 2.7T and only going to change the turbines and brake calipers after 14 months, aside this I have not fix anything on the car since I bought it except for normal servicing which I did just once.
I'm a businessman and most months I don't even make up to 100k yet I own two cars both of which I take good care of.
Get yourself a good tokunbo car my brother, don't listen to those who claims to spend N1,500 on fuel daily.

I bought my first car while earning arround 100k.I must confess it didnt change much in my spending pattern, since I bought a very small one (toyota paseo) with extremely low fuel consumption and maintenance cost. I am on my second car now, a bigger one, but very reliable one again. I spend a little above 2k weekly, and I have not had to do any major maintenance for the past 9months. My advice is that, at that level of income, the best that can happen to you is to buy a very reliable one with very low fuel consumption. Beware of cars with expensive parts and crazy fuel consumption...and finally beware of Niger used, dont be penny wise pounds foolish. Cheers

The op simply asked if its possible to maintain a car on 100k salary monthly and Nigerians as usual like to take everything personal and always build the future before living in the present. What if he is 25, do you know whether the op lives alone, do you know whether the op's parents are well to do or not.

Op, there are better things to do in life than be bothered about the future when you can easily secure your present and walk majestically into the future.

Nigerians always giving silly advice since 1960, so if the op decides to buy land or do investment it is now very sure the op will buy 10 cars in a short while. Op buy the car, have peace of mind and live a fulfilled life. Life is too short to be gambling on investments because before that investment profit gains weight to buy car, man for don old oo.

Me sef don dey take am personal grin op abeg what ever rocks ur boat jare.

2000 - 2002 Accord are fuel efficient, cheap to maintain and sweet to drive.

In as much as the above is true, ild advice u go for a corolla or yaris. Honda can't take as much abuse as toyota and judging by your tone, ure looking to not spend much on maintaining a vehicle.
There's also the issue of fuel economy. My 05 corolla Le auto tranny (bought 9ja used) that even needs an O2 sensor replacement( this will improve fuel economy) still averages 30mpg when the manufacture spec is 35mpg for combined city/highway driving. I don't see any accord beating that. 2k fuel takes me through the week with AC and enough leftover for weekend movement. That said, all u gotta do is service with max 15k if u want to stick with manufacturers recommendation( 5w30 oil-7500, denso plugs-3k, oil filter-1500 and labour) and ure good to go.
The Honda is certainly more luxurious, It took a lot of will for me to decide on the corolla but I gotta tell u it was d better choice.

Hi Guys

I have a job and i earn 100k per month and i am thinking of getting a car(been on the job for a bit), but i am planning maybe year ending, i want some advise from my good people in the house if it would be advisable.

P.S - i dont have much responsiblity at the moment i am 25 and i am also bettering myself with some certifications.

Thanks as you advise and not insult me, lol

Yes u can maintain a car on dt salary even on sth far less. U ve to buy a car dt fits ur pocket maintenance wise dts all like golf 3, toyotas of 96 - 2001 with less than 1.8l engine. U dnt need to impress anyone wat u need is a car for a start which means sth to move u frm point A to point B.
A car is a liability but a necessity n an average car will serve u. D image, comfort n convienence a car can add to ur life is worth it.

OP's issue is similar to one I responded to here on NL. www.nairaland.com/2111020/car-piece-land-which-buy/1#30132346 Nonetheless, can @OP's salary keep up with a car's maintenance, yes. Does OP need a car, its up to him.

it's not proper to compare fuel economy of corolla and accord. They come with different engine capacities. Compare the corolla with civic on fuel efficiency.

The more reason why I advised he goes for a corolla instead of a accord. Less cost, it get you around and frankly, it's not bad to look at

I really like the honda accord 03- is the maintenance and fuel cost that much compared to a corolla

It's not about feeling "cool", it's about being practical.

Your statement alone tells me your reasons for owning an automobile are more to do with showing off, being "cool" when really you could do without one.

there's reasonable difference in the fuel consumption of both cars. Maintenance wise, I don't really see much difference

I bought my first car ever when my salary was N64,000.00/month. That was a/an '03 Honda Accord (EoD) that's in my profile pix. By the time ny salary was about N93,000.00/month, I was already driving my 4th car, a Mercedes Benz 190 E. Now that I'm earning about N160,000.00/monthly, I am driving a 2009/10 Honda Civic Coupé and it costs me next to nothing to keep her running.

If I can keep the car running with additional responsibilities such as house rent, school fees and other supports for younger siblings, then you can do it also. Do not mind those who are discouraging you. Please, follow your desires.
