Help For Sickle Cell Anemia And Stroke- Any Hope? by babeface3: 5:42pm On Apr 13, 2015
I witnessed the sickle cell crises experienced by my nephew and thought I would ask about help.

Health experts recommendations will be highly appreciated.

Also, does any one know where stroke patients are better treated home or abroad?

Thanks

I'm sorry to hear that he isn't feeling too well. SCD is a very difficult situation, but with proper management, he'll be able to lead a relatively normal and happy life.

It all depends on his current clinical presentations. What are his symptoms? If you could describe the symptoms he's experiencing a bit more, that would be great. Many people with SCD presents with different symptoms at different stages of the disease, so clinical manifestations differ among SCD patients. MANAGEMENT AND CLOSE OBSERVATION ARE VERY IMPORTANT, so please make sure that he frequents his pediatrician or hematologist. It is recommended to take 1mg of folic acid a day. Additionally, if he's under 5, you can put him on a daily antibiotic until he is 5 years of age - this is because his immune system is compromised and he is therefore prone to early childhood infections (please talk to his physician about this). Also blood vessel occlusion is very common in SCD, so it might be helpful to put him on an analgesic or NSAIDs (I recommend talking to his physician about this since he/she would be better at making an assessment of his situation).

Thanks my sister, he feels serious waist pain and asks everyone to hlep him hold his waist. It looks like the pain a woman in labour experiences. The parent says placing him on antibiotics and heavy analgesics shortens his life span and therefore only gives him vitamins and paracetamol. I really want to find out better help for the 12 year old.
