A peptic ulcer is a spot where the lining of the stomach and the tissues beneath-and sometimes part of the stomach muscle itself-have been eroded,leaving an open wound inside the stomach.Ulcers can occur anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract but are most common in the stomach.
Symptoms of a peptic ulcer include chronic burning pain or gnawing stomach that usually begins forty-five to sixty minutes after eating at night and that is relieved by eating,taking antacids,vomitting ,or drinking a large glass of water.The pain may range from mild to severe.It may cause the individual to awaken in the middle of the night.Other possible symptoms include lower back pain,headaches,a choking sensation,itching and possibly nausea and vomitting.Many factors affect the secretion of stomach acid.Stress and anxiety cause an increase in acid production which is why ulcers are so related to stress levels.Taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDS) especially over a long time can increase stomach acidity and lead to ulcers.Steroids ,such as those taken for arthritis and even vitamin C supplements can contribute to stomach ulcers.Heavy smokers are more prone to developing ulcers and have greater trouble getting ulcers to heal.Apart from stress recent evidence has implicated a common type of bacteria Helicobacter pylori.This organism is almost always found in persons who have ulcers and is seldom found in persons who do not.Irritants such as spices,coffee,tobacco,carbonated beverages e.t.c
in recent years it has been found that the traditional cure for ulcersare without basis.For example
1.Drinking large amounts of milk helps cure ulcers.Today it is known that milk can raise acid levels.
2.It is neccessary to eat often and small amounts.This keeps the stomach in a case of near continous stimulation which increases acid production even more and is counterproductive as an ulcer cure.Three meals a day are preferable to five or six.
3.One should avoid eating fibre.If they are well chewed,they protect against gastric ulcer.
INCREASE INTAKE OF:
1.CABBAGES,POTATOES(IRISH) BOTH PREFERABLY JUICED.
2.OATS,TAPIOCA,OKRA,OILS(VEGETABLE ONLY)
3.FIBER CONTAINED INWHOLE GRAINS ,LEGUMES,AND FRUITS.
4.VITAMIN A ESP NATURAL SOURCES CAUTION SHOULD BE TAKEN DURING PREGNANCY AS HIGH LEVELS COULD LEAD TO FOETAL ABNORMALITIES.
5.VITAMIN C

REDUCE OR ELIMINATE:
1.COFFEE AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
2.SPICES
3.MILK IN LARGE QUANTITIES
4.WHITE SUGAR

Also natural herbs such as Alfalfa rich in vitamin K which enhances blood clotting needed for healing is very helpful.Rosehips rich in vitamin C and Pure honey a good substitute for white sugar.
