The chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) Community Service, Kogi State, Alhaji Abdullahi Ohiomah, has lauded what he described as “the indigenous characteristics” of the IVMG5, a mid-market sports utility vehicle (SUV) manufactured in Nigeria by Innoson Motors Company Limited. Ohiomah told LEADERSHIP in Lokoja recently that the SUV assembled at the Innoson’s Nnewi vehicle manufacturing plant had proven that Nigeria could do what the developed nations were doing if the right policies were made and diligently implemented. “When we wanted to get the vehicles, we had initially preferred the Prado (Toyota), but the federal government insisted that we must buy the one made in Nigeria in line with the national automotive policy. So we went for the IMVG5 manufactured here in Nigeria by Innoson Motors, and it is very close to what we wanted. It has been one year now that I started using the vehicle and it has been a great experience all along,” he said. We were not too comfortable when the vehicles were given to us and it happened that there were some minor problems we had with the vehicles initially, but they were immediately fixed by the manufacturer and since then, there has not been any other problems and the manufacturer has laid to rest our discomfort. The engine is very reliable,” he noted. Innoson IMVG5 is built with 2.0-litre Mitsubishi 4G69S4N engine measuring 1,815, 1,800 and 4,640 mm in width, height and length respectively and a 2WD drive system. Like its rivals in the Nigerian auto market such as the Rav4, Honda CRV and the Nissan X-trail, the IMVG5 is fitted with five seats with calibration power of 100/5250 having both manual and automatic transmission options. Ohiomah said having belonged to a generation that began life with new vehicles, it was difficult to switch to using a used car, as he admonished automobile representatives in Nigeria to begin to embrace the national automotive policy and invite their parent companies into the country to access the option of local assemblage of the vehicles. “The reason for the auto policy is very clear. What we were doing before (importation of vehicles) is exportation of employment. There is no employment, but if all of these auto makers are assembling their vehicles here, there would be a huge number of jobs,” he added. |
