Clashes in Durban as 5,000 South Africans march against xenophobic attacks Police use tear gas and rubber bullets against machete-wielding gangs as protest takes place against rise in attacks on foreigners across South Africa Nigerians in Johannesburg armed themselves with machetes on Friday after a number of their businesses were attacked by South Africans who have been targeting immigrants over the last few days. Meanwhile, machete-wielding gangs clashed with police in Durban on Thursday as 5,000 South Africans marched in protest against attacks on foreigners living in the country. Demonstrators marched through the port city chanting "Down with xenophobia" and "A United Africa" in response to attacks on immigrants that have claimed at least five lives and forced many more to abandon their homes and businesses. They were led by the city's mayor and the premier of KwaZulu-Natal province. But as they did so, police fought running battles with gangs, some chanting for foreigners to leave the city, just metres up the road. Police responded with stun grenades, water cannons and rubber bullets. Police fire rubber bullets (APTN) The xenophobic violence that started in Durban two weeks ago has spread this week to Johannesburg and other areas of the country. Attacks on foreigners, sparked by frustration over high unemployment and pressure on services, are not new in South Africa - attacks focused on Johannesburg in 2008 saw more than 60 people killed. The latest bout of violence has largely been blamed on comments by Goodwill Zwelithini, the Zulu King, that foreigners were "lice" who should "pack their bags" and return home. A burnt out car lies upside on the road (APTN) It has prompted several African neighbours, including Malawi, Mozambique and Somalia, to send rescue missions to repatriate its citizens, and seen warnings from business about "dire consequences" for South African enterprise abroad amid threats of a boycott in the region. After a long silence, President Jacob Zuma appeared before parliament on Thursday to remind his countrymen of the solidarity shown to so many South Africans in exile during the apartheid years. Mr Zuma promised to address concerns about border controls which are thought to have seen South Africa's population swell by as much as 10 per cent due to the arrival of foreign immigrants. But he stressed that many immigrants were in the country legally and bolstering its economy with their skills. "No amount of frustration or anger can ever justify the attacks on foreign nationals and the looting of their shops," he said. "We condemn the violence in the strongest possible terms. The attacks violate all the values that South Africa embodies. |
