United’s springtime rejuvenation seems to have been yet another false dawn. Despite all the post-Manchester derby optimism, they are now looking to avoid a third successive league defeat for the first time this season. Their saving grace is their home form, which is excellent, with a long streak of wins trailing back to early January. They have not only beaten teams at Old Trafford but often blown them away, scoring at least three times in five of their last six games there.

Albion, meanwhile, travel to Manchester off the back of a stalemate against Liverpool, a performance which delighted their manager Tony Pulis. This result, combined with their recent 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace, means that they have now kept two clean sheets in two and arrested a run of defeats which had sent them sliding perilously towards the drop zone.

Injuries and suspensions

Wayne Rooney (below) is a major doubt, having sustained injured his knee during a typically poor display against former club Everton. This should allow Robin van Persie, another player with a point to prove, back into the fold. The match should also provide another opportunity to test United’s reliance on Michael Carrick. The metronomic midfielder is unlikely to recover from a calf injury in time to make the squad.

Yousouff Mulumbu is available for West Brom again following the end of his suspension for an elbow in the 4-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers. The only absentee for Pulis’ side is ex-United goalkeeper Ben Foster, who remains out of action with a knee injury.
