It is not out of place for entertainers across the
world to pitch tent with any politician gunning
for public office.
In fact, endorsement of candidates by movie
and music stars as well as other celebrities
goes a long way in winning elections. But the
recent endorsement of outgoing president
Goodluck Jonathan by Nollywood stars and
other entertainers may have been one of the
reasons Jonathan lost the election badly to
General Muhammadu Buhari, his All
Progressives Congress, APC rival.
The entertainers got carried away and drifted
carelessly into the tricky waters of politics with
loads of naivety as companion. Instead of
endorsing Jonathan and allowing their
individual stardom to convince the electorates,
they decided to be campaigners; which is also
within the limit but when they took over the
jobs of presidency attack lions such as Doyin
Okupe and Dr. Reuben Abati; that was when
they crossed the line of civility!
The fees they were getting from the ‘generous’
former presidential candidate of the People
Democratic Party, PDP,
got into the heads of our entertainers and they
began to insult General Buhari like every
average politician in the PDP. Listen to popular
comedian and actor Gordons, during one of
Jonathan’s many meetings with entertainers.
“The two top presidential candidates, one
senior the country. Like GSM battery, na only
one bar remain; na that one him wan take rule
us? Na death dey come so.”
The comedian did not spare former president
Olusegun Obasanjo who became sympathetic to
the opposition party, All Progressives Congress,
APC: “OBJ no tear paper when he was small; na
when him be adult him dey tear paper”
Nobody was listening to veteran comedian Ali
Baba’s words of caution at that time. They have
gone overboard; from Ibinabo Fiberisima (the
contractor of entertainers for Jonathan) to
Segun Arinze, Fidelis Duker, Imeh Bishop,
Ramsey Nouah, Kingsley Ogoro, Charles Novia,
Patience Ozokwor, Ini Edo and Walter Anga
among many others were busy abusing Buhari
on camera. Ali Baba tried to tell them: “My
colleagues think that by going to Abuja to
collect money, all is well, but it’s not true. We
need a proper structure for the industry.”
Nobody listened.
One of the most damaging insults Buhari got
aside the famous AIT and NTA TV
documentaries came from no other person
than Isoko, Delta State born gospel singer
Sammie Okposo. It caused quite an outrage
online and he had to apologise the next day.
Hear a supposed gospel singer: “From perjury
to forgery: Buhari or whoever forged that
certificate needs to be flogged. Prior to the
formation of a central government by Gowon,
all regions had separate curriculums. Only the
western region offered a local language in both
their curriculum and WASC! It was after a
central government was formed and a
universal educational curriculum was
developed and adopted which included other
local languages in 1974! So which WASC did
Buhari write in 1961 that included Hausa?
Scroll to page 9 of this academic write up and
see a brief summary of the total subjects
entered from 1961 to 1974 and the percentile
of students per subject.
Afro hip hop act Duncan Mighty did not want to
be left out in the race to abuse Buhari. Read
what he posted online that period: “Idiocy is
the point at which you go to London to fight for
individuals without PVCs. Mumu is the point at
which you go to London and neglect to return
with your acclaimed Cambridge authentication.
Mugu is the point at which you didn’t go to class
and you fashion a declaration and come online
to say Sai Buhari.
“Silliness is the point at which you have been
yelling up NEPA since you were conceived but
however anticipate that GEJ will turn into a
magician inside four years. Akpos is the point
at which you read day and night to get a
testament and still need ‘semi-illiterate’ to
administer you. 419 is when Buhari said he
obtained 27 million loan for presidential form
yet Buhari’s wife gives drug worth N135m to
displaced persons in Yola.”
I took the troubles of going online to search for
the list of entertainers that endorsed President
Barrack Obama of the United States during his
first election and re-election campaigns. The
list could fill a whole book. Almost all top
Hollywood stars and music sensations from Ben
Affleck, Pierce Brosnan, George Clooney,
Robert De Niro, Eddie Murphy, 50 Cents and
Mariah Carey among so many endorsed Obama
(please see list of entertainers that endorsed
Obama) and none at any point went on air to
abuse John McCain, Obama’s rival.
Instead of Nigerian entertainers to curry
support for Jonathan using their stardom, they
ended up putting a lot of people off with their
cheap and abusive manners. Jonathan was the
loser overall because instead of stopping them,
his silence was an encouragement; a sign they
were doing the right thing.
But now that the elections are over and
Jonathan had lost his re-election bid, we can
now safely assume that the stars’ abuses aimed
at Buhari did not work. So this is the time to
make amends. This is the time for Nollywood
and music stars that rained abuses on Buhari to
apologise to the president-elect, General
Buhari and their fans for behaving ‘un-starly’.
Buhari could conveniently be the father of a
Sammie Okposo and Duncan Mighty and for
both of them to publicly abuse their father’s
mate no matter the millions they was paid,
leaves much to be desired.
Buhari should accept the apologies of these
spoilt ‘stars’ and do what he has to do for the
industry. I am sure he has moved on from all
the flaks thrown at him during the campaign
period. But he should be careful of these stars.
They are so cheap, they will attempt to worm
their way into Aso Rock and turn it into a beer
parlour like they have done in the last six years
under Jonathan. Buhari should not use them to
abuse any political rival (they will willingly do
that even without Buhari asking). He should
reinvigorate the dying industry so that they will
be gainfully engaged instead of being
politicians’ men Friday.

Sometimes people go overboard when doing somethings.I told some of my colleagues during the campaign that passing of insult is not a good campaign strategy. The concept of campaigning is telling the people what you are capable of doing and willing to do and not planting a seed of hatred against their opponent through unguided utterances;as people you are talking to are not fools.
