Electricity remains a big challenge in our society and many have turned to electric generators run on petrol and diesel. In This article, I will be comparing the cost of powering a 3 bedroom flat/bungalow with renewable energy (solar, wind and biogas). The big question is WHICH IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE AND MUST REALIABLE? I WILL MAKE THIS ARTICLE AS SHORT AND CONCISE AS POSSIBLE, lets deal with other details in the comments there after Let’s look into Petrol/ diesel generators Solar power Wind power And Biogas This thread will serve the purpose of answering your questions on this subject. POWERING A 3 BEDROOM FLAT/BUNGALOW APPLIANCES: 2 32inch tv sets, one deep freezer, 4 standing/ceiling fans, 10 light points ETC DURATION: 18hours a day

WIND ENERGY CAPACITY: 4kw COST OF EQUIPMENT: N800, 000 to N1, 200, 000 (depending on features the system has, Autonomy and brand used) COST OF RUNNING FOR 18HRS PER DAY: N0 COST OF SERVICING per year : Negligible TOTAL COST IN 5YEARS = N800, 000 to N1, 200, 000 ADVANTAGES OF WIND ENERGY 1. No running cost. Install and enjoy for years without spending on anything 2. No emmisions 3. Very easy and convinient to operate 4. Very reliable if the autonomy is well calculated 5. Saves you lots of money in the long term. 7. High life span. 25years for the wind turbines, 5years for the batteries. DISADVANTAGES OF WIND ENERGY 1. Very expensive setup 2. Not suitable for uban areas especially for large setups 3.Requires high level of expertise for setup and repairs. 4. The wind turbines could be an eye soar Note: Wind energy is still the best source of renewable clean energy. Better than solar, biogas and petrol/diesel generators., but it is very impractical in many areas. Best place is in country homes with lots of space. Another problem is profiling the wind speeds in the area where it is to be used, wind speed and frequency are very irregular [/quote] |

To make it very simple, biogas is very much like your natural gas that u use in cooking. They are both produced by biodecomposition of organic matter in an oxygen free environment where the by product is composed of a percentage of combustible gas majorly methane. Biogas is produced all around you without you even knowing. In a typical refuse dump, biogas is being produced and expelled into the atmosphere. In your closed sewer tank (soak-away) biogas is being produced in small quantities and wasting away. Biogas is just a natural by product of decomposition of anything organic by anerobic bacteria. |

So how much biogas can you get from a liter of human or animal feaces, kitchen waste etc? How much electricity can you generate from the biogas produced What is the cost of setting of a bio-digester How do you maintain the gas output What are the setbacks of using biogas for electricity generation This and more to come |

1. Human waste can't generate enough gas for home use so forget powering your home with gas generated from you soak-away. You only produce about 300g-500g of feaces per day which will make about 5liters of slurry with 30% of volatile solid. This will only give you about 0.8 cubic feet of biogas at atmospheric pressure composed of 50-55% combustible methane. This is not only enough to boil a cup of water. Or run a 4kwatt generator of some a few minutes with zero load on it. So how much organic waste do you need? If you really mean business about using biogas you need to look beyond what you can get from your household. |
