Will The APC Deliver On Their Promise Of 2 Million Jobs? by socialmediaman: 7:20pm On May 06, 2015 |
Will The APC deliver on Their Promise of 2 Million Jobs Annually? In 1998, while making a presentation at Silicon Valley, California, Google Inc co-owners, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, boasted that the Google search engine would generate a revenue of over $10 billion dollars. This projection wowed their Angel Investor who instantly gave them a cheque of $12 million dollars to startup the Google search engine business. While The Google owners were very confident at that time, they had no clear-cut strategy of how they would achieve this feat. Months later, however, they stumbled upon an experiment by an independent technology researcher, they copied this idea and this gave birth to what is known today as Google Adsense, the biggest revenue source of Google till date. The APC political party, probably In a bid to woo Nigerians to support them at the March 28 and April 11 elections, made a promise to create up to 2 to 3 million jobs annually. Just like Google co-founders, they got the support they needed, will they deliver on this promise? Before we answer this question, let's highlight the odds facing them. Nigeria's economy, though the biggest in Africa, has been plagued with corrupt leadership and human rights abuse since 1999, resulting in theft of national resources estimated at over $600 billion dollars, collapse of major economic sectors and institutions, High unemployment despite significant oil boom and petrol dollars witnessed in the past 16 years of democratic leadership, and most recently, fall in Oil prices by over 45% which threatens development in Africa's biggest economy mostly dependent on oil revenue. The ability of the Incoming government under the APC leadership to deliver its promise to Nigerians, based on prevailing circumstances, will highly depend on government's ability to diversify the economy and maximize its internal revenue generation capacity, eliminate excessive wastage in the public sector, rebuild damaged institutions and infrastructure, restore the confidence of the Nigerian people, and work with the best intellectuals that Nigeria has to offer. One of the key areas where government has failed in the past is in the area of moving beyond its party block to engage the services of Intellectuals and "Think Tanks" among everyday Nigerians who can use their intellectual prowess to propel Nigeria to the next level. Good governance goes beyond effective administration, it also entails creative generation and effective implementation of goal oriented policies. While I firmly believe that the incoming government of General Muhammadu Buhari is committed to providing good leadership to Nigerians, I also believe that the monopoly of knowledge does not lie within the APC and the incoming government needs to open up communication channels, discover and work with creative intellectuals that Nigeria has to offer in abundance. If government adopts this approach, I strongly believe it will be able to timely deliver the much awaited promises to the Nigerian people. God Bless Nigeria. - SocialMediaMan writes from Abuja. |
