[color=#000099]United Nations said it is not considering any compensation for Nigeria after handing over Ba-kassi Peninsula to Cameroon but is bothered about the sustainable peaceful co-existence between the two African countries.

UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Communication and Public Information, Kiyo Akasaka, said the two nations respect the treaty and judgement of the International Court of Justice in Hague on the Bakassi Peninsula. And so the UN also respects the positions of the two countries on the issue, but it is not considering any compensation for Nigeria.

Nigeria had in August last year finally handed over Bakassi Pennisula to Cameroon government after many years of legal battle between the two countries.

“I personally respect the decisions of Cameroon and Nigeria on this important issue, and we do hope that the peaceful relationship that exists between them before the handing over will continue”, he said.

Akasaka also said UN is impressed with Nigeria’s level of growth recorded so far in the implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and micro economic development in the country.

“I want to say UN is impressed with Nigeria’s MDG, most especially in the area of non-oil sector. Nigeria has also experienced growth in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from 6.1 per cent in 2007 to 6.2 in 2008. The country has also witnessed growth in the areas of poverty reduction, gender equality, control of HIV/AIDS, access to water and sanitation. This is good for Nigeria”, he said.

Akasaka said with the level of Nigeria’s contribution to peace and security, UN would continue to work closely with Nigerian government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), schools.
