Just considering that recharge cards consumption in this country is expected to reach over 120 million people each month would make any one who may never have been interested in recharge cards business to consider making an investment. And getting to know that you can actually control your own market (no matter how small) by printing vouchers on your own and distributing them to clique of outlets, makes the business even more interesting. The recharge cards market is so lucrative that banks are jostling for market share.
According to a survey conducted in 2004, recharge cards are the fastest selling products in the country-only second to pure water; imagine how lucrative investing in the business could be with an insatiable demand for more and more cards.
Quoting Success Digest Extra newspaper of Monday, 1st March, 2010 verbatim “Everyone is aware of the millions the telecommunication industry is generating on a daily basis. The industry is so enormous that those who are not directly involved in the mainstream of telecommunications are also making millions of money – those involved
in the sales of phones, SMS short codes and bulk SMS business. Another area where people make money is the printing and sales of recharge cards business. The sales of recharge cards are undoubtedly raking in billions of naira every day all over the country. Recharge card is one of the fastest selling telecommunication products in the country today, with a daily sales report of N1 billion worth of recharge cards. (Currently, that figure is over N6 billion).

This means, every month, Nigerians spend N30 billion buying recharge cards to make phone calls and send text messages. You can imagine how much would be spent buying recharge cards in a year by phone users. This upsurge in the sales of recharge cards is due to one reason or the other: for instance, security and emergency purpose, kids are given phones, as they reach certain age brackets by their parents.

Even people in cities are buying phones for their parents in the village. So the need to recharge their own phones and phones of their kids and also send recharge cards to their parents in the village. So, you can imagine the huge potentials in the sales of recharge cards. It is like selling a kind of food that is essential for every human being.”
This analysis did not even include those who recharge to make internet browsing on daily basis.

Furthermore, in IT & Telecom Digest, an online newspaper of Tuesday, 9th of October, 2012, the formal Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ernest Ndukwe said that by December, 2012 Nigeria should have 105 million subscribers, up from 103.4 million. (The current statistics revealed well over 120 million subscribers).

“Today, the figure for active subscribers in the mobile networks is over 100 million lines and may surpass 105 million by end of December 2012. Indeed Nigeria has transited from what I describe as the telecommunications dark ages before 2000 to a telecommunications revolution age that has opened up new possibilities and frontiers across our political, social and economic landscape,” he said.

He added that Nigeria will continue to show growth since it emerged from telecoms deregulation in 2000. ”The latest subscriber data NCC showed that the industry grew its active subscriber base to 103.4 million as at the end of July, 2012, jumping from 96.1 million in January, 2012,” he concluded.
