• How we deceived police, by accomplice

By CHRISTOPHER OJI

A notorious armed robber has regretted
coming to Lagos to operate.

The suspect, Hamzat (aka Babalawo/ herbalist) and two others who were being interrogated at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SAS) of the Lagos State Police Command said he had left Lagos before he was lured back by their gang leader, Emeka, simply called Mopol.

“I am a native doctor. I inherited the powers from
my late father. He died in 2011 but he taught me
how to cure general sicknesses. I was an armed
robber in Ikorodu. My gang was doing very well
until recently when SARS started dealing ruthlessly with us. Well, about four months ago, I was at newspapers stand in Ikorodu when I saw a story about the Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti, warning armed robbers to leave Lagos or be dealt with.

“I was afraid the man was serious. So, I told my
guys that we should relocate because, it is only
the person that is alive that would be talking of
money. We all came to Lagos for money. I am
from Oyo State. Well, Emeka (aka Mopol) deceived
me, by telling me that he was a driver to one Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). He told
me that the DIG would intervene whenever we run
into problem.

“I refused initially, but because, I have seen him in
police uniform and with a police identity card, I
believed him. I came back to Lagos. I would have
continued being a native doctor. I have a powerful
shrine in my compound, but because people don’t
patronize native doctors again, I was forced into
advance fee fraud (419). I collected money for
rituals. I collected between N500,000 and
N700,000. After receiving the money from my
victims, I took them to my shrine where I
positioned my boy in one corner. I told my victim
to ask the oracle whatever he or she wanted, and
my boy who spoke as the oracle, would give my
victims stringent conditions like, “you must bring
five pidgeons and sprinkle their blood on the
shrine, then the person would go.

“I was making money from the 419 deal until it
seemed people started discovering my antics,
that was why I went back to Mopol. My trouble
started.

“It was Mopol who sent me to collect a stolen car
from an armed robber. I did not know it was a set
up by the police. So, it was when I went to pick
the car that the police arrested me.

“I am angry because I had spent time at Kirikiri
Prisons in Lagos, Mopol who was sponsoring our
gang should have known better rather than luring
me back to Lagos. If I had remained in Oyo, I would not have been in this mess,” Hamzat said.

Mopol said Hamzat should stop blaming anybody
for his predicament. “We were all armed robbers
and everybody should know that whatever we
sow, so shall we reap. After all, I was also arrested
when I went to Shagamu to collect a snatched
vehicle from him.

“He should know that I meant well for him. I was
trying to help him. Everybody knows me as a
Mopol. I am a driver to a DIG (names withheld) I
have a police identity card, which I flashed at
policemen at roadblocks. I wore police uniforms
too. It was difficult for the police to know whether
I was a policeman or not. The thing that was
amusing was that each time we were on
operation, the police would see us and they would
salute me and still pay me complements.”

The state police spokesman, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu,
said three members of the gang were arrested
while efforts were on to arrest others.

I hope the IG can get to see this and the incoming president Buhari and start a cleansing of the police force.

So many silly people in such a sensitive sector as the police.

A herbalist is different from a babalawo (Ifa priest/consultant). Hamzat is not a babalawo.
