Hi NL, I have been following this thread for so long. My question here is, I don't have parents anymore and I will be done with my nysc by july. Please how do I go about the sponsor thing. I have 2.0m in my acct burr I'm not sure that would be enough. Before u start asking how the money came! It's inheritance. Pls how do I go about the sponsor. I also don't have any uncle or relatives who can sponsor me. Thanks all

First, I'm going to warn you. Because of the 2m you mentioned, you are going to be receiving emails and 'offers' from scammers posing to be nairalanders for their 'services'. Be careful how you divulge your financial status on the internet, especially on this forum.

Second, 2m will not really take you that far in terms of tuition alone here in the US. The cheapest US schools you can find will gulp close to 3m to 4m a year on tuition alone. Not including living expenses, miscellaneous and what have you.

Third, when you get into the US, don't think that your sufferings will 'end' and you'll suddenly start 'enjoying' life. You will be very surprised to find that life is very difficult here. I like being blunt and I say things the way they are. But the good thing is if you work hard you are sure of the gains and where it will lead you to. On average, it would take you close to 5 years before you can find your feet in this country.

For anyone who doesn't have a system going for them in Nigeria and who doesn't have any hope of making it in Nigeria, I can encourage you to come to the US. You will have an average life here. You will have a job, a house (on mortgage), a car (on loan), etc. You can change cars easily as you change okirika clothes, so far as you have a job that can afford the monthly payments. You can change phones anyhow and enjoy the latest phones as they are released. You will enjoy fast internet services and stream videos online easily. You'll have the life you never dreamed of having in Nigeria

However, for those who already have a system going for them in Nigeria - a good job, investments here and there, who want to resign from their jobs, sell their investments off all in the name of going to emelika, that would be the greatest folly of your life. With your status in Nigeria, you are way better off than your mates in the US who barely have investments and depend on that one job or as many as 3 jobs to survive, to be able to pay their house mortgage (lest the bank repossess their house and they go homeless), pay their car loan (before the car is repossessed), etc. and you can always visit the US and spend as many as 6 months if you want. Life in the US for many revolves around working, working and working. Taxation is very high. People barely have investments or savings in this country because they live from paycheck to paycheck.

The decision is left for you to make. At this point you have 2 decisions to choose from - either spend the next couple of years investing your inheritance into a profit venture in Nigeria that ensures returns every month, further invest your profits into other investments, expand your portfolio (there are good investment opportunities in Nigeria, which foreign investors are taking advantage of) or come to the US and spend the next 5 years working really hard to find your feet (going to school here because you really need a US degree to get a good job here + getting your residency) and living the rest of your life just like every other American - work, pay bills, work, pay bills, a revolving cycle. I'm just being blunt. America isn't the heaven that we think it is in Nigeria.

Lol. Lesson number 1 learned. Never be too direct with Americans. Americans are not direct people. We Nigerians are very direct. It is one of the cultural differences you'll notice when you come in here. You'll start learning how to mask your intentions perfectly, how to come up with a lot of convincing reasons to support what seems to be your conviction, meanwhile your intention is the exact opposite, and also how to talk a lot.

Hahahaha
This is one big lesson.
Some departments will tell you they don't have funds. Na lie o
They just want to reserve it for the most driven students and want you to convince them you have enough research drive to merit full funding.

Exactly. They have funding but they reserve it for the best and most driven ones for research. Americans work by 'logic' and not by their 'hearts' (I.e. by please my papa no get money but I wan go school. Abeg dash me funding). They want to see your expression, your interest and passion for the research, not for the money itself.

Its why anyone who wants funding has to fight for it. The tips I gave the poster who got admission without funding is a secret only known by a few and I can guarantee him that will get funding if he follows my advice.

hay bro don't be discouraged....if your dreams is to study abroad you don't need to have millions before your dreams comes to be. I was in the same shoe like this last year and I tell you I made it out of Malaysia. As an international student I enter Malaysia with just 1000Naira if you know much about Malaysia u will know that Naira is not even allowed in Malaysia.

I tell you this if only you have faith brother please proceed with what you have no matter how little it is. God will always be there to help you when you in need. I got the same discouragement before I leave for Malaysia but still I went I saw and I conquered. Music one will dance with two legs....you might dance that same music with one leg. Your destiny is not tie to anybody you can make it in the U.S. Even with what is happening there. #JUSTBELIVE

Depends on how much they are paying you per hour and have it in mind that tax some shit still gonna be deduct from your pay check. Let say they pay you 10$ an hour and you worked 20 hours per week. Your check will prolly be between $140 and the 150,

Good morning everyone. I have gone through the pages here and I have to admit I find them very informative. I want to apply for a master's degree program in the University of Massachusetts and Bridgewater State university. I am studying to take GRE but, for the course I want to apply for (professional writing) , they said MAT is more preferable. I checked online to see if there are MAT centers in Nigeria but I can't seem to find any.

I would like to know if anyone has taken that particular test here or I should just continue with GRE plans.

If anyone here is around the schools I want to apply, please notify me.

If anyone has any advice, please feel free.
