Imo State University Goes On Strike Till Further Notice. by Chuks16(m): 2:01pm On May 15, 2015 |
By Chidi Nkwopara OWERRI— The indefinite industrial action embarked upon by Imo State University, IMSU, Owerri, chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has stalled academic activities in the institution. Vanguard had exclusively reported that the university teachers were spoiling for an indefinite industrial action, following the non-payment of arrears of their monthly wages by the university management. The indefinite strike, which took effect from May 7, 2015, was declared by the leadership of IMSU- ASUU after its congress to press home their demand on the payment of their two months of unpaid salaries. A cross section of students who spoke to Vanguard, yesterday, on the issue, expressed displeasure over the inability or Imo State government’s unwillingness to pay its workers as at when due. “The indefinite industrial action has negative impact on students and their parents. ‘’The strike is doing a colossal damage to our academic pursuit,” a female student lamented. Her male counterpart in the Faculty of Law, said: “These strikes destroy the university’s academic calendar, as well as prevent us from completing our courses of study on schedule.” The students were unanimous in their belief that previous industrial actions had badly affected their studies, as well as lured some of them into engaging in despicable acts. |
