Court Threatens To Jail Police IG For Disobeying Court Order by Kingpinukecy(m): 9:55pm On May 15, 2015 |
The Inspector-General of police, Solomon Arase, has been served a Notice of Consequence of Disobedience of Court Order (Form 48) by an Enugu Federal High Court after the State Police Command failed to reopen the House of Assembly as ordered by the court. In the Notice signed by the court registrar, the court threatens to jail the IG if he fails to obey the court order. The Form 48 read in part, “take notice that unless you obey the directions contained in this court order, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison.” The State House Of Assembly has been under locks and keys since May 5, when crisis broke out after the Speaker Eugene Odoh led 14 lawmakers to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Sullivan Chime. The court however ordered that on Monday, May 11, that the House be opened, but the state Police Command flouted the order as the House remains closed five days after the court order. The presiding judge, Justice D.V. Agishi granted an ex-parte motion brought by the Speaker of the Assembly, Odoh, in suit number FHC/EN/CS/99/2015, which has eight members of the House of Assembly, the Commissioner of Police and the IGP as 1st to 10th respondents respectively. |
