The management of the Lekki Port Lagos Free Trade Zone Enterprise has announced the commencement of work on the construction of the N325bn Lekki seaport situated in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State. The total value of the marine and land infrastructure for the L port was given as N156bn. The contractors for the project, the EPC Contractors and China Harbour Engineering LFTZ Enterprise, received an advance payment of N1.42bn from the Lagos State Government at a ceremony held in Lekki on Saturday. The event was attended by the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Alhaji Sanusi Bayero; Head, Corporate Finance, Standard Chartered Bank, West Africa, Mr. Leke Ogunlewe; Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Olusola Oworu; Senior Vice-President/Chief Executive Officer, Africa Region, International Container Terminal Services Incorporated, Jens Floe; and Managing Director, CHELE, Mr. Wang Zhichao, among others. The Managing Director, Lekki Port, Mr. Haresh Aswani, said, "We are honoured to be part of this promise. We thank the Federal Government of Nigeria and its agency, the NPA, and the Lagos State Government for their support as we look forward to this partnership. "We congratulate the EPC Contractors, CHELE and our terminal container operator, the ICTSI, on achieving this significant milestone that pushes the project from a development phase into a full construction phase." Aswani urged the incoming government to work with private enterprises to build the needed infrastructure in the country. He added that the Lekki port was a model that could be replicated by providing long term policies that would attract similar investments. Bayero described the notice-to-proceed on construction issued to the contractors as a quantum leap and expressed the resolve of the NPA to tap into the huge market provided. He said, "As a port authority, we see potential for growth and strive to make it a reality at all times. A port with a depth of 16.5 metres will allow bigger vessels to berth. "This will enable our ports to be enormously competitive due to economy of scale and it will have positive macroeconomic impact on Nigeria in terms of employment, taxes and royalties. As we begin the consummation of our strategic alliance with the promoters of this project, the NPA will not waver in its continued support." Oworu urged the promoters of the project to ensure its development at a rapid pace so that the port could become operational within the set timeframe. http://odili.net/news/source/2015/may/18/821.html 3 Likes 2 Shares |

naptu2:Correct. I forgot about Badagry. But I think having 4 major seaports may lead to uncontrolled explosion in the state's population. Many firms would like to settle in Badagry and Lekki, which would attract more job seekers and their families to Lagos. 3 Likes |

CFCfan: Exactly. The Lekki and Badagry projects also incorporate new industrial areas and other projects beyond the ports. The Lekki port will have the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the Lekki International Airport (which has been on the drawing board since the 1980s), the Dangote Refinery, a lagoon port, Lekki Phase 2 and other projects as neighbours. The Badagry Port will have the Oando Refinery, a power plant and the Energy City as neighbours. 9 Likes |

Lagos population is on the way to 40 million...its becoming like the UK but without a dedicated rail network. There's nothing great about having fantastic infrastructure when the whole Nigeria wants to move to Lagos. Lagos State alone can't absorb all this population and industrial pressure, Island in particular. 3 Likes |
Re: Construction Work Begins On N325bn Lekki Seaport by naptu2: 10:26pm On May 19, 2015 |
The basic idea is that development is concentrated in the centre of the city (Lagos Island [especially Marina], Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Yaba, Surulere and Apapa) and the Ikeja area (Maryland, Oģba, Ilupeju, etc). So the government wants to spread development eastwards (Lekki Free Trade Zone), southwards (Eko Atlantic City), westwards (Badagry Free Trade Zone and Energy City) and northwards (Ikorodu Industrial Estate [which will benefit from the new bridge]. This is to reduce pressure on the centre of the city and Ikeja. 5 Likes |

Without a comprehensive rail network, you are creating one hell of an over-populated, log-jammed and overrated city which no sane person would love to live in. 2 Likes |

stevecantrell: You are right and also wrong. Once there is money to be made, people will gravitate there despite the madness. I remember when there was no Third Mainland bridge. Traffic jam on Ikorodu Road used to be something else. The more things change, the more they seem to stya the same To build a mass transit system to effectively cover Lagos State will cost about 2 trillion naira. Nothing less 3 Likes |

grandstar: For sure ppl will continue to run to Lagos, but what about the quality of life ? The same thing happened UK during Tony Blair's Labour government. The whole globe was gravitating to UK and settling there .Within 5 years UK quality of life and living standards fell, the natives blamed it on the 60 million population strain , mostly immigrants, on a small island (UK). Right wing anti immigrant parties like the BNP soon came to prominence. This is on of the key issues leading to Labours loss to the Tories later on. An overcrowded Lagos will hurt Lagos without a proper masterplan. Fashola is megalomaniac , what's so special in that ? It is good planning that makes sustainable progress, not commissioning projects randomly every week. 2 Likes |

stevecantrell: You do have a point. All governments want to be known for growth and development. Even if the money was available to upgrade the transport network, the logistics involved is nightmarish. For instance, the recently expanded Lekki Road will need a either a tram service or metro. How will you build one as there is no space. 5 Likes |

grandstar: Atlantic city is laudable project, no doubt. But ecologically , its unsafe. Its yet another megalomaniac project of egotistical Fasola. Reclamation of land involved in the project is damaging the Lagos coastline in other areas.Bar beach and its environs are still under serious threat. Because it worked in Dubai, doesn't mean it will necessarily work well in Lagos. We should allow other SW states like Ogun have a fair share of the burden of industrialisation. Lagos is really to small to take all this on without somekind of repercussion on the land and the people. 2 Likes |

grandstar: Usually the rail line to all these projects are mapped out before the sites are commissioned. Lagos has serious problems on the way and many can't see that yet. 2 Likes |

CFCfan: Ports make cities, there is no deep sea port in Rivers State. If Bonny was linked by bridge and Rail then Rivers can become another hub. Ibaka would have helped Akwa Ibom but it never really took off the ground. Tinubu and Fashola are visionaries which is what we lack in the Niger Delta. My people think of only today not tomorrow. Bayelsa especially the Brass area would have been another wonderful natural site but GEJ was sleeping on top bike. 6 Likes |

otokx:Not all great cities are port cities. Las Vegas is a prime example of a budding non-port city. What makes cities are top class infrastructure and human resources. But I agree with you that most of the governors in the SS and SE, since 1999, have lacked the foresight to turn their states to credible alternatives to Lagos. Literally, 10s of trillions of Naira have gone to waste 1 Like |
