I'm being forced to eat my words by posting on this forum again, but I couldn't help but say something in response to Larenz. We have excellent mechanics in Nigeria who can fix heavy equipment for you, but you will be helping them a great deal if your equipment isn't so Hi-tech. You are very correct in your business analysis and the redundancy factor, that is the textbook approach to business management, but you have overlooked one critical point. Your potential Market I see you are siting your quarry in Cross rivers state, so that means your target market is the south east, assuming yours is the only quarry there, can your target market take 1920tons of granite daily? Thats 64 trailers per day. This is key to the success of your plan, as this is the figure you have used to determine that you can afford a dozer with an airconditioned cab for your operator. Don't get me wrong, I would really love to get a good-looking aerodynamically streamlined dozer with ABS and skid control But my competitors are using $35,000 D8k's and can afford to crash the market with lower rental rates because they can buy 4 machines with the same amount it will cost me to buy 1 state-of -the-art dozer. So technically they'll be making 4 times what I will. If your competitors are JB and Setraco, by all means buy brand new equipment. And I like your strategy of using a machine for just 4years and then selling it. Maybe I will be opportuned to buy one off you when you decide to sell at rock bottom price D8N's are very recent machines so you can expect them to be expensive. I am more interested in D8k's as they are rugged and basic. The parts are readily available and I do not have to buy from CAT offices alone. Also the engine is the same as the D8H which Dumez used when they were in Nigeria so there are a lot of mechanics trained by Dumez out there looking for work. I'm located in Benin City Edo state, and I'm into equipment rentals. Cheers guys. |

ambyzown: Would you kindly provide a list of Equipment and their rental rates, conditions, and condition of rental? I have been seeking this type of information for a while. I was initially prone to Cross Rivers, but I am rethinking the strategy. I'll give you some hints of where I am leaning towards though: Think Railroads, Dams, Tons of roadways and Megacity, In anycase, this is home anyways, and likely not prone to some Big-Wig politician who could attempt to bully a shut-down because he is a competitor. It hurts that there is incessant tribalism and Omo-onile mentality in Naija. There is no value attached to intellect, and this is what holds us backwards. Here are some interesting Dozers:

@Larenz & EzeB: I'm still a small shot in the equipment rental business, as I only have one dozer and one pay loader. Hopefully before the end of this year I will increase my fleet. Rental rental rates are as follows. D8 dozer ------ N120,000 per day D6 dozer ------ N 90,000 per day Pay loader ---- N 80,000 per day Grader --------- N 70-80,000 per day The general terms of leasing are: Lessee pays rental for the number of days required in advance. Lessee pays for transportation of equipment to and fro in advance. Lessee pays Operator daily allowance (N5k) Lessee is responsible for Diesel and security of the machine. Machine works 8hours a day. Check my profile for my contact details. Email me, its as good as sms as I get my emails in real time. |

@Ambyzown, Thanks for your post and analysis. I know it is painful, giving advise and people not hearing the facts. @Larenz. I know you have done your business analysis, and you are not operating on the same level as Ambyzon, but please do a dry-run before you comit funds. A month with Ambyzown will show you a lot of facts (nigerian factors) that will send you back to the drawing board. |
Re: Want To Purchase A Bulldozer Need Help by larez(m): 1:34am On Mar 03, 2009 |
@Ambyzown Thanks for giving the figures. Much appreciated. @Kafan I just don't know how to respond to you. Your statement was rather incoherent. It was very presumptuous. I will assume that any sensible person who tries to operate a business in Nigeria will consider the Nigerian factor. Hopefully, you will not assume that I am naive enough to preclude that. As a matter of fact, my inquiries here should indicate my being thorough in doing my due diligence. Each person based on their exposures and experiences sets up their business model relative to their perceived activities. However, your advice is noted, even though it really doesn't make much sense to me since you do not know my model. |
Re: Want To Purchase A Bulldozer Need Help by Kafin(m): 2:27am On Mar 03, 2009 |
@Larez, You will have to forgive me for my earlier comments, that was my state of mind after reading through the thread. No where in your earlier posts did you acknowledge the points that Ambyzown raised, nor did you discuss your mitigations. On a second thought, you dont need/have to. But considering the informations that you have provided, I would expect some hints. Please be my friend (you are obviously a big-boy, and could help me in a number of ways) and not an enemy. Best Regards, Kafin |

Kafin: I don't have a problem with you Dude, so nothing to forgive. Hope my words were not harsh. That wasn't my intention. Just clarifying. Big-boy, Small-boy stuff isn't in my paradigm though. I see all men as equals. Take care now, later |

I'm very impressed with the responses from almost every poster on this thread. So much maturity has been displayed in every reply. Its such a refreshing change from the sort of things we experience on other threads. Kudos everyone. @Springjoys: At the prevailing interest rates, do you think it is still wise for any businessman to lease-purchase equipment? Interest rates are now at an average of 25% per annum. If I were to buy a Dozer costing approximately N6million using your lease scheme, I will be paying you back N9million in 24 months. Insurance and Anniversary fees have not been included. If you offer a different and more consumer-friendly package, please let me know. |

I really enjoyed this conversation between all of you. I am highly interested in this bulldozers. I have tried my hands on so many businesses in Nigeria and been burnt so many times. Auto, Boat, Computers and Eletronics equipments. You can not trust even your own blood and I am getting tired of staying overseas. Been in the US for over 22 years. My question to you forumites is "Can this be done without your presence in Nigeria?. I have found out 99% of businesses other than real estate requires presence in the country. I am looking to build something first before leaving for Nigeria permanently. FYI, I stll have a very good job paying extremely well and this is not something to leave for uncertainties. I just dont have a life here. Thanks for your responses. |
Re: Want To Purchase A Bulldozer Need Help by promise72(m): 7:04pm On Mar 10, 2009 |
mufasaus: The answer is capital "NO". virtually NO BUSINESS can be run in Nigeria without your presence. There are so many things that can go wrong that u dont know. They can lie to you that the equipment is down while someone is raking in 120k daily. When the equip then need maintenance, they will be calling you. What i can advise to u is that if you want to do that kind of business, you can let your wife move to naija for about a year to run it and see if its viable enough to leave your job for. You already know that you dont have a future at ur job. Its a matter of "when" not "if" you will eventually burn out. Bite the bullet. There's no easy solution, i know your wife/kids moving to naija is not easy to swallow either but unless u are ready to lose ur investment thats when you will send it home and hopefully they do the right thing. Unless of course ur parent(s) can monitor it. Yuo decide. Good luck. |
Re: Want To Purchase A Bulldozer Need Help by ambyzown(m): 10:20pm On Mar 10, 2009 |
Absolutely not. If you want your business to be a success, then you need to attend to it yourself. Except of course you have someone you can trust,, And note that the operative word here is TRUST |

I been following this thread for a while, I will like for someone to please help me out with this question. I have heard that the older the better for the Dozers, in that case what will be too old. For instance will a 1969 CAT D8 be too old? Please help me out so i don't make a mistake. Thank you |
Re: Want To Purchase A Bulldozer Need Help by KunleA2(m): 3:58pm On Sep 18, 2010 |
amastar: Its not a question of whether its too old or not. it comes down to the condition of the machine itself. Make sure the engine performs well and MOST IMPORTANTLY is the transmission and undercarriage (the chains). The "Older is better" syndrome is not necessarily true. However, most mechanics in Naija are very familiar with them and don't need any specialized tool or computerized equipment to diagnose the problem. This will help you in case you break down in a remote village. Most of our people are afraid of the new technology hence they advise you to buy what they are familiar with. I think you can still be ok with any D8 machine up to like 1985 without any issue. The engines and concept (though slightly updated) are very familiar. You don't have to stick to only 1969. Just expand your search to up to 1985 and buy the best machine you can afford. What i mean by that is that if you have like $30k to spend, you find a 1980 in excellent condition and another 1984 in ok condition. i will say you buy the 1980. Don't be hung up with the year. Just be concerned about a good machine. Get it inspected by a certified CAT technician before you buy it. Good luck in your find. |
