[url]N19.5 billion Aviation fund: Fani-Kayode escapes ban

Soji-Eze Fagbemi, Abuja - 12.02.2009

Reprieve came the way of the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, on Wednesday as the Senate formally rejected the recommendation from its standing committee to ban him from holding public office for five years.
During a debate on the report of the Senate Committee on Aviation that investigated the N19.5 billion Aviation Intervention Fund released to the sector in 2006, the Senate dropped the recommendation to have the former minister barred, thus, put an end to the controversial debate.
The report of the committee had, among other things, recommended that Chief Fani-Kayode should be barred from holding public office for five years.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Anyim Ude, who presented the recommendations of the panel, said the committee considered many issues before recommending that Fani-Kayode should be barred.
Senator Ude said Chief Fani-Kayode should be barred for “the established irregularities in the award of contracts in the Ministry of Aviation, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) during his tenure.”
Ruling on the recommendations, the Senate President, David Mark, said the Senate had already resolved that since issues concerning Fani-Kayode were already in court, there would be no need to take actions that could prejudice court decisions.
He said the Senate took notice of all recommendations concerning safe tower projects over which corrupt practices were alleged to have been perpetrated.
While the Senate unanimously agreed that the recommendations be dropped, it directed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should investigate the source of due process certificate issued by the Bureau of Public Procurement.
