Meaning of Computer

Computer use to be thought of as some magical devices, which known everything under the sun and can perform all feats, including impossible ones. Unfortunately, this view is still widely held in some part of the world. Many people are also of the view that a computer is mainly used to perform arithmetic operations. But a computer performs much more than arithmetic operations.

In a nutshell, a computer is an extremely fast electronic device that can manipulate alphabetic, numeric and other symbols that human being used to represent things, according to the instructions given to it to do so. It is important to note that computer simply carry out instruction given to them. A set of instructions met to accomplish a given task is called a program.

A computer can also store vast amount of data and retrieve same within an extremely short time. This ability to retrieve (‘recall’, ‘remember’) within a very short time might have also contributed to some myths. To some it is the engine with a brain. The fact is that, the computer does not inherently think (so has no brain), though there are programs that enable some form of thought.

As we shall see soon, the computer is a very versatile tool that can be used in so many diverse situations. (This is one of the reasons why the computer is so popular. It is also one of the sources of computer myths.) Indeed, in the developed country, computers are used in virtually all activities of every day life. The trend is moving to the less developed country, even though at a rather slow pace in some cases. Just check your cheque book. The chances are that some cheque is MICR (Micro Ink character recognition) cheques. Not only has that, in a quite number of our banks, a single account in one branch allowed you to do transaction in any other branch nation wide.
