Politics / Nigeria's Senate Passes First Anti-terrorism Act Law by 234Ent(m): 1:08pm On Feb 18, 2011
InformAfrica News

Nigeria’s Senate on Thursday approved the country’s first anti-terrorism act, giving law enforcers greater powers to detain and prosecute suspects and judges more guidance on handing down punishments.

President Goodluck Jonathan pledged in January to aid a speedy passage of the legislation after bombings in December in the central city of Jos and the capital Abuja led opponents to question his ability to guarantee national security.

The bill gives the police and security forces powers to seal off a property or vehicle without a search warrant and allows judges to order the detention of suspects for up to 30 days if they feel it is in the interests of public safety.

All terrorism cases will now be heard at Nigeria’s Federal High Court where, depending on the severity of the charges, judges can pass sentences of up to 30 years in prison.

Anti-terror legislation in other parts of the world has been controversial, especially when dealing with surveillance, which human rights groups and even the United Nations have said can sometimes go beyond what is required to combat terror.

Nigeria’s bill gives the top law, police and government security officials the right to access post, e-mails, phone calls or other data if they believe it is in the interests of national security.

Politics / Billionaire Businessmen And Former Rivals Joins Jonathan’s Campaign by 234Ent(m): 4:13pm On Feb 15, 2011
Billionaire businessmen and former northern rivals have joined Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team ahead of April elections, the ruling party said on Tuesday, further cementing his chances of victory.

The presidential campaign council announced by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is a roll-call of Nigeria’s wealthiest bankers and industrialists, and also includes some northern politicians who had opposed Jonathan, a southerner, at the primaries.

Many of Jonathan’s billionaire backers are long-term PDP supporters, suggesting it will be business as usual should he win, with the same commercial interests as before holding influence in sub-Saharan Africa’s second biggest economy.

But the list suggests momentum behind Jonathan is building.

Kwara state governor Bukola Saraki, originally part of the “northern consensus” and a challenger to Jonathan for the PDP nomination, was named chairman of a reconciliation committee to try to heal rifts within the party ahead of the polls.

Saraki is seen as a potential presidential candidate in 2015 and needs to stay influential in the PDP if he is to succeed.

Jonathan is the first head of state from the oil-producing Niger Delta in the south and his candidacy is controversial because some in the PDP say it breaks a gentlemen’s agreement that the next president should be from the mostly Muslim north.

Billionaire businessman Oba Otudeko — the former chairman of the country’s oldest lender, First Bank, whose interests stretch from oil and gas to flour — was named as head of Jonathan’s fund raising committee.

Aliko Dangote, an industrialist whose cement business alone was valued at $14 billion when it listed last October, and fuel importation tycoon Femi Otedola, chairman of African Petroleum, are also among Jonathan’s backers.

Dangote and Otedola are Nigeria’s two richest men, according to Forbes magazine, which put their personal wealth at $2.5 billion and $1.2 billion respectively in 2009.

Other backers include Mike Adenuga, head of local telecoms giant Globacom, Zenith Bank founder Jim Ovia, former United Bank for Africa chief executive Tony Elemelu, and northern petroleum tycoon Sayyu Dantata.

Celebrities / Re: Genevieve Has Been Banned From Nigeria? by 234Ent(m): 9:52am On Jan 12, 2011
Genevieve Nnaji and other related actors and actresses affected in this rumor, were not actually banned from Nigeria (That is insane for anyone to even think that) , but were blacklisted by movie producers. This Top superstar artists such as Genevieve, Omotola, Ramsey Noah, Jim Iyke, and others get paid almost 6 times higher for a role than other actors in any given movie based on their celebrity status.

Producers wish they could pay this actors less than they do, but that won't be possible because this actors have built a very high reputation not just in Nigeria but international. You guys need to see how this actors and actresses are honored here in the united states, its almost as if they were Top Hollywood actors like Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, etc,

TV/Movies / Nollywood’s Prospect Is Radiantly Bright –Lonzo Nzekwe by 234Ent(m): 9:38pm On Jan 03, 2011
If the name Lonzo Nzekwe does not strike you in anyway, the movie, Anchor Baby, one of the best ever to have hit the Nollywood scene, would definitely ring a bell. This may be due to its popularity in the media or its engaging and biting climax, in case you have been lured to the cinema by the movie.

But for a man, who says, “I am just a self-taught producer and director,” what many critics in Nollywood hate to hear, Lonzo is credible and also deserves respect as far as any moviemaker in Nigeria should get.

“I just studied film editing and bought a lot of DVDs through which I taught myself.

“I have always wanted to write a movie that people can relate with and I can see that is happening right now because the movie is out here and a lot of people love it.”

Anchor Baby has its setting in the United States but it was actually shot in Canada, the reason for this is not far-fetched.

According to Nzekwe, it has to do entirely with him, as he shed more light on the process of producing the movie.

TV/Movies / The History Of Nollywood: Nigeria's Mega Film Industry by 234Ent(m): 1:36am On Dec 11, 2010
Source: The History of Nollywood

The Nigerian movie industry (Home video Industry) a.k.a Nollywood has been typically accepted to have started-- immediately following the success of Ken Nebue’s “Living in bondage”. From then on, its expansion and attendant complications are known (by fascinated parties). However , events preceding 1992, are not popular even although a few have tried to trace the history of Nollywood. Here is an abridged edition (yet richly enlightening) from one of several articles i published concerning this topic matter.

Film exhibition began to thrive for the duration of the Colonial era, with Glover Memorial Hall playing host to a array of unforgettable films viewed by “potential Nigerians”, in August 1903. However, the non-availability of proper data reflecting the title of the debut movie exhibited has created a lapse in the precedent stock. Notwithstanding the lacuna, the way have been paved for that exhibition of additional foreign films at the Hall at identical time as other designated venues.

The emotionally traumatizing “Master – Servant” relationship, apparent in the constant assaults, batteries, intimidation, segregation, victimization, carried out while using Colonial masters on the colonized, with darkened clouds of resentment, vengeance, thirst for freedom, offering option to splattering drops of such thoughts, instinctively projected consequently of the colonized intermittent in-subordinate actions, began to distribute one of many blacks. The British realized they had to thread with caution when they even now desired to take part in “god” inside their lives when films just like Tales of Manhattan, Trailer horn, Tarzan series began to stir up a revolution in the hearts of Blacks around the globe.

Aware of the lethal energy of insurgency which could be unleashed consequently of the movie medium, the British out of fearfulness for his or her lives and achievable the loss of the Queen’s sovereignty took the bull while using horn, and swiftly created a Colonial movie Censors Board (FCB) in 1933 to censor and classify films just before they were released for visual consumption while using public. Following the establishment of the board, Films just like “The primitive, primitive man, Dixie, Buffalo Bill, The Keys of the Kingdom, Sleepy village Girl were tagged ‘suitable’ to be watched , while Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Clive of India, The Isle of Forgotten Sins, home of Frankenstein were considered as unsuitable for viewing .

The Censor’s amount underwent a transformation process into the Federal Board of movie Censors (FBFC) from your aforementioned, along while using laws from which the changed amount derived its powers ranged from your 1948 Cinematograph Laws of Nigeria, the Cinematograph Laws of 1963, towards 1963/64 Cinematograph regulation and Regulations. The existing National movie and Video Censors Board came into existence by virtue of decree, now Act 85 of 1993. The advent of Nigeria’s Independence (1960) along while using Republican status (1963), heralded the dawn of a new era in all sectors.

“The Yoruba Travelling Theatre Group” of the 60′s and 70′s can be proven to given that the “Fountain Head” of movie productions in Nigeria. The veterans with excellent Theatrical skills and excellent performances took their works outside of the stage, and dove into the sea of movie productions making utilization of the Celluloid format. Notable movie makers on the Roll phone of Honour for the duration of the Celluloid boom era of the 70′s include Ola Balogun, Eddie Ugbomah, late Herbert Ogunde, Adeyemi Afolayan a.k.a Ade adore (father of Kunle Afolayan of the Irapada fame), Ladi Ladebo, Moses Adejumo, Adebayo Salami and Afolabi Adesanya.

The list of documented films created for the duration of the 70′s era and transcending somewhat into the 80′s is simply astonishing and goes to demonstrate that the Movie Industry has been near to much longer, contrary towards ‘1992 perception syndrome’ most are already injected with .
Such works include Kongi Harvest (1971), Alpha (1972), Bull Frog in the sunlight (1974),  Amadi (1975), Ajani Ogun (1975),  Muzik Man (1976),  Bisi, Daughter of the River (1977), Ija Ominira (1978), Aiye (1979), Kadara (1980), Jaiyesimi (1980) Efunsetan Aniwura (1981), Cry independence (1981),Ija Orogun (1982) Owo L’Agba (1982

The cost of creating films in that era was financially back breaking, with Nigerians much more aggravating the efforts of the filmmakers by opting to measure out films of occidental and oriental origin at the Cinemas and Exhibition centres, rather versus the locally created ones. The Cowboy films were exhilarating to measure out while the Chinese films paraded among others, the Legendary “Bruce Lee” in (Lo Wei’s, The enormous superior (1971), Fist of Fury (1972), means of the Dragon (1972), key in the Dragon (1973), The video game of passing away released in 1978) who exhibited fighting techniques dexterity, clearly a fighting technique alien, yet fascinating to us at that time.

This thread is not meant for you guys to start bashing at each other over what country is greater or worst.

I think it's appropriate for anyone to share their experience/trip to any country so others can relate to it. In this case, Ghana is the subject.

Fact: Ghana is dependent on Nigeria. If Ghanaians don't want to admit that. I'm sure other Africans can see that clearly. There are more than enough Ghanaians in Nigeria who are living comfortably than they were in their country, and I'm happy for them.

If Nigeria is not over-crowded by Ghanaians and neighboring countries; we can more efficiently manage our resources for the good of our own people and nation. But it has to start from a corrupt-free government.

Nigeria and Ghana feud, when will it end? We all one people, in one continent, from the African soil.  There's more money to be made when we work together without pride.

Technology Market / Oracle Acquires 10.2% Of Mellanox Shares For $70million by 234Ent(m): 6:27am On Oct 29, 2010
Oracle is now the second largest holder of Mellanox shares, after Fidelity Management with 11.7%.

Story By Nir Zalik

In a strategic move, software giant Oracle has accumulated 10.2% of Mellanox's ordinary shares on the open market. Since the share price has averaged around $20 over the last month, the sum of the purchase is estimated at $70 million. Oracle is now the second largest holder of Mellanox shares, after Fidelity Management with 11.7%. Other major stakeholders include Alger Management with 7.5% and CEO Eyal Waldman with 5.3%.

Last month, Oracle co-founder and CEO Larry Ellison said that Oracle's investment policy would encourage strategic partnerships with technology companies. Mellanox shares subsequently spiked by 7.8% in a single day due to ThinkEquity Partners' assessment that the Israeli company would be a likely objective.

Mellanox, a supplier of end-to-end connectivity solutions for servers and storage systems, won't be a target for a hostile takeover, Oracle said. Rather, its intention is to invest in Mellanox and support the future of Mellanox's InfiniBand products.

The possibility that Oracle might increase its hold on Mellanox with further open-market stock purchases, and eventually attempt a takeover, cannot be ruled out, but this scenario isn't likely. Waldman has been emphatic about keeping the company independent and building an Israeli giant in this sector, and he recently attempted unsuccessfully to acquire CopperGate.

Oracle also pointed out that the two firms have enjoyed a long-term strategic collaboration. "This allows Oracle to leverage Mellanox's InfiniBand products to create differentiated Oracle solutions like Exadata and Exalogic," it said. "A strong and friendly relationship with Mellanox is critical to Oracle."

While its products complement Oracle technology in the field of servers, Mellanox also collaborates technologically with Sun Microsystems, which was bought out by Oracle last year for $7.4 billion. Mellanox also expects to continue working with other technology vendors, such as IBM, Dell and HP.

Mellanox specializes in developing semiconductor-based communication devices installed in organizational data centers using InfiniBand protocols. The devices are used to connect servers with storage systems and assist in the transfer of data.

TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood Need To Study filmmaking and production by 234Ent(m): 6:41am On Oct 26, 2010
This is a good thread you've started RSAMAN.

For an industry that is worth over $2.5 Billion dollars, they definitely need to step up their game in film-making. Anyone can produce a movie these days, but that is not what film-making is all about. You have to love what you do, and dedicate enough time to make it right for the public to appreciate.

For example: a lot of Nollywood directors/producers spend huge money building beautiful big houses, but hardly will they budget enough funds to produce a very good movie with great production. Yet, they complain about piracy.

I honestly do not support film-making produced in less than six months; it's worthless. A good production should take at least a year and the half, if not more.

A typical example of a good movie with great production is IJE: The Journey - By Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade, Clem Ohameze, etc

Kudos to Chineze Anyaene for this wonderful story and production!

Just as RSAMAN implied in his post: Nollywood producers need to "study". [Study how to make good movies. Attend an art institute overseas if possible]

Politics / Building The Foundations Of Unity And Progress -Goodluck Jonathan by 234Ent(m): 7:02am On Oct 02, 2010
This is an Address by President Goodluck Jonathan On The Occasion Of the Nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations Today 1st Of October 2010.

Fellow Citizens,

Today, 1st October, 2010 marks the 50th Anniversary of our independence from Britain. It is with a deep sense of humility and gratitude to the Almighty that I address you this morning.

On this day in 1960, the heroes of the nationalist struggles and all Nigerians were full of hopes and dreams. The citizens of the new country danced in colourful celebration of the newfound freedom. Nigerians were filled with expectations as the Union Jack was lowered and the green-white-green flag was raised in its place. A new country was born. A new journey had started on a road never taken before.  The future was pregnant with promise.

With patriotism and pragmatism, our founding fathers charted a course for the greatness of this country. While there were differences and disagreements, they did not waver in their desire to build a country that future generations would be proud of. They made compromises and sacrifices. They toiled night and day to build a viable country where progress and peace would reign supreme.

Our independence was gained by men and women who envisioned a land of freedom and one of opportunity.

Our founding fathers sought a government of character that seeks justice to her citizens as our national anthem so eloquently describes: One Nation Bound in Freedom, Peace and Unity. However, today, the opinion of many Nigerians is that these dreams and expectations have not been fulfilled.  Not only have people despaired about the slow pace of progress, some have in fact given up on the country. Some believe that if the colonial masters had stayed longer, Nigeria may have been the better for it.

All these postulations, we must admit, are borne out of a somewhat justifiable sense of frustration. Our troubles and failures are well catalogued. For a country that was, in terms of development, on a similar, if not better level with many countries at independence, it is  discomforting that we are lagging behind as the economic indicators among nations now show.

In the midst of these challenges, it is easy to forget our unusual circumstances. We have actually been moving from one political instability to the other such that we have barely been able to plan long-term and implement policies on a fairly consistent basis.

This instability has also impacted negatively on institutional development, which is necessary for advancement. The structures of governance had barely been developed when we ran into a series of political obstacles shortly after Independence.

While we were at it, the military took over power and this fuelled a different kind of political instability which ultimately led to the unfortunate 30-month Civil War. This was certainly not the dream of our founding fathers who sacrificed so much to give us Nigeria. They did not dream of a country where brothers would be killing brothers and sisters killing sisters. They did not dream of a country where neighbours and friends would exchange bullets in place of handshakes.

Military rule and the Civil War were major setbacks for our nationhood. They produced a polluted national landscape. This did not offer the best atmosphere for national development. It impacted negatively on Nigeria socially, politically and economically, a situation which further undermined our aspiration as a stable nation.  Without political stability, it has been very difficult to plan and build our institutions like other countries that were our peers.

Dear compatriots, despite the serious challenges that we have been living with; we cannot ignore the fact that we have cause to celebrate our nationhood and even a greater cause to look forward to a brighter future. This is a historic occasion when we need to pause and appreciate who we are, what we have, and to reflect on the encouraging possibilities ahead. There is certainly much to celebrate:  our freedom, our strength, our unity and our resilience.

This is also a time for stock-taking,  to consider our past so that it will inform our future.  This is a time to look forward to the great opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for Nigeria. In fifty years, we have in several respects, attained heights that we should be very proud of as a nation.

In the fields of science and technology, education, the arts, entertainment, scholarship, and diplomacy, Nigerians have distinguished themselves in spite of the enormous hurdles they encounter everyday. If we could achieve so much under tough conditions, we are capable of achieving even much more in our journey to the Promised Land.

Our strides in medical science are hardly celebrated. Recently a team of Nigerian scientists led by Dauda Oladepo of the International Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) discovered CD4 Lymphocyte baseline for testing people living with HIV/AIDS.  The effort is all the more remarkable because it was funded by the Federal Ministry of Health and its findings are particularly useful to the Nigerian environment.  The discovery is very vital to monitoring and managing the disease progression in infected people.

Also, a Nigerian scientist, Dr. Louis Nelson, has made significant progress in his research to find a permanent cure for diabetes, which afflicts over 123 million sufferers worldwide. The vaccine that has made Yellow Fever disease manageable was developed in our shores! While we may not have landed a spaceship on the moon or developed nuclear technology, our inventors and innovators have made globally acknowledged contributions. Clearly, these are indications that within us are potentials that can be harnessed for greatness.

Nigerian writers have won numerous awards on the global stage.  Professor Wole Soyinka gave Africa its first Nobel Prize in Literature.  Professor Chinua Achebe pioneered the most successful African novel in history.  Ben Okri won the Booker prize.  Helon Habila,  Sefi Attah and Chimamanda Adichie, among several others, are internationally renowned.

In the movie industry, Nollywood is rated second biggest in the world. Nigerians have by themselves defied all that is negative around them to build a billion dollar film industry from the scratch.  This is a major landmark worth celebrating.

Today our actors and artistes are household names in Africa and parts of the world. The future can only be brighter as competition in this sector breeds improved quality and better creativity. Our leading professionals - lawyers, scientists, economists, doctors, diplomats and academics are celebrated all over the world. They occupy prestigious positions in the leading institutions across the developed world. Most of them were born and bred in Nigeria. Most of them schooled here before they travelled abroad. This should tell us something: that daunting as our circumstances have been, we are still full of ability and capability. We are blessed with talented and patriotic Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora, many of whom are willing and ready to return home to be part of the drive to turn Nigeria around for good, so that the country can take its pride of place in the comity of nations.

My brothers and sisters, as we begin the journey to another fifty years of nationhood, we have two choices to make.  We can choose to focus on the imperfections and problems that easily beset us as a nation or we choose to focus on the unlimited possibilities that we have. I urge us all to choose the latter.  I prefer to see the silver lining in the dark cloud rather than the dark cloud in the silver lining.

Today, we need to celebrate the remarkable resilience of the Nigerian spirit. We need to appreciate, that even though the road has been bumpy; we have trudged on, in hope. We may not have overcome our challenges, but neither have our challenges overcome us. Whenever we are completely written off, we always bounce back from the edge to renew our national bond for the benefit of our progress. That is the Nigerian spirit. This is what has kept us together as a country even when other countries with far less challenges have fallen apart.

Chairman of Friends of Democracy Group for Jonathan 2011, Mohammed Abba Aji, yesterday, said President Goodluck Jonathan will declare his intentions to run for the presidency in 2011 polls at the end of Ramadan.

Goodluck Jonathan

Mr Abba Aji spoke on Tuesday in Abuja when the group inaugurated their state offices for the 36 states of the federation in Sheraton hotel. “President Goodluck Jonathan will certainly run and he’s going to declare after Ramadan,” he said. “The president is fasting along with us. So because of this he is holding on and as soon as Ramadan is over, he will declare for the presidency.” Mr Abba Aji, who is the Special Adviser on National Assembly matters to the president, added that a convenient date for the Mr Jonathan’s declaration will be announced after Ramadan. “The president will run, it is the desire of all politicians to aspire to the highest level and he is now the closest person to that seat because he’s already sitting on it,” he said. “So he is the closest person to the presidency in 2011; nobody is closer to it than Jonathan because he’s already on the 2011 seat. He is going to run and no doubt about this.” Ramadan will end in early September.

Running with Sambo

The group, which has membership drawn from the political elite, dispelled rumours that the president would adopt another person, other than his current vice, as running mate. “There is no doubt that he is running with the Vice President Namadi Sambo,” said Mr Abba Aji. “Don’t believe the report that he is considering dropping his vice, don’t believe them.” He said that most of the state governors supported the group, adding that they are not threatened by the refusal of some few governors to join their ship. “So we have no fears at all because our governors will in due course, support our course,” he said. “Many of them have expressed their support. On the last count we have the majority, over two-thirds of the governors are already with us and not that the rest are not with us, the rest are getting ready to declare.” he said.

Members of the group, who were present at the inauguration, includes former deputy senate president, Ibrahim Mantu; federal lawmakers - Ita Enang, Ufot Ekate, Ataidoko Ali, Osita Izunaso, Abdulahi Gumez; and former deputy governor of Edo State, Lucky Mazue. “Jonathan is contesting the next election because it is now his entitlement to seek re-election, then he automatically takes it to the south,” said Mr Abba Aji. “After his four years, then it comes back to the north and then zoning goes again.”

Nobody should promote this gay and his demonic acts, and for all those in support of this so called "dead man walking" homo will be well punished by God and real humans.

Please nobody should host or promote/blog about this gay. Nigeria or Africa as a whole is all about uplifting our land, culture, and what we stand for. No homosexuality should be tolerated at all cost. This guy is God's reject & should go change his name to a uk name or somethin, and wipe Nigeria or Africa out his mouth!!!

TV/Movies / How Mark Zuckerberg Created Facebook - The Movie. by 234Ent(m): 10:46am On Jul 16, 2010
It is clear that Facebook is the world's largest social network with nearly 500 million users around the world, up from 200 million in early 2009. Its policies, more than those of any other company, are helping to define standards for privacy in the Internet age.

However, you may be surprised to hear this, but Facebook has a new movie coming out on the 1st of October this year. It's a legend thing: a sophomore at Harvard working out of his dorm room creates an Internet sensation that makes him the youngest billionaire in history. And as with any legend, there are many different ways the story can be told.

This fall, a new film called "The Social Network" will depict how Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook and the battles -- both legal and personal -- that sprang out of the site's unprecedented success. In the just-released trailer, it shows Zuckerberg as an outsider, looking to break into Harvard's elite inner circle. When he launches his site, it's an instant success, but Zuckerberg is accused of stealing the idea from fellow classmates.
