APC Cancels Proposed Meeting With NASS Members-elect by OKDnigeria: 12:42pm On Jun 04, 2015
The meeting scheduled by the All Progressives
Congress leadership with all National Assembly
members-elect to adopt a concensus candidate
that would be presented as Senate President
during the inauguration of the 8th National
Assembly, has been cancelled.

Some senators-elect, who confirmed the
development to our correspondent on Thursday,
explained that the party leadership took the
decision following a growing tension as a result of
protests by the lawmakers who allegedly
disagreed with an attempt to impose concensus
candidates on both chambers of the National
Assembly.

However, a member of the National Working
Committee of the party, who spoke on the
condition of anonymity, said the meeting which
would have been held in two sessions, 7:00am;
and 10:00am, was cancelled to enable the NWC
consult properly with President Muhammadu
Buhari, who is currently out of the country.

The NWC had, at its meeting held with Buhari on
Tuesday night, listed certain critical criteria for the
next Senate president.

The meeting had agreed that the party’s candidate
for the post must come from the geopolitical zone
with the second highest number of votes after the
North-West during the Presidential Election held
on March 28.

The party leadership also agreed that the next
Senate president must not have any corruption
charges hanging on his or her neck and should
be one of the most ranking senators in the current
Fourth Republic.

A senator who attended the meeting told our
correspondent that the leadership of the party was
mandated to, within three days, present the most
eligible aspirant as consensus candidate for the
post, based on the listed criteria, during
inauguration next week.

The two gladiators currently contesting the office
of the Senate President are Senators Bukola
Saraki ( Kwara Central ) and Ahmad Lawan ( Yobe
North ).
