When a man complained at an Empangeni hospital of abdominal pains and vomiting blood, doctors made a shocking discovery – he had swallowed 227 metal objects.

The 25-year-old, who had failed to take his psychiatric medication, had been eating forks, keys, bolts and a R1 coin among other objects.
He walked to Ngwelezane Hospital in Empangeni when the pain became unbearable.

Dr Maheshwar Naidoo, a specialist surgeon and head of the hospital’s general surgery department, said the metal objects were identified by X-ray.

He said the man underwent a laparotomy last month.

“We had to operate to remove the steel objects and he recovered within a week,” the doctor said.
“He seems to have defaulted on his treatment, which caused his condition to flare up.
“This is not unique, there have been similar cases at RK Khan and at Prince Mshiyeni hospitals in the past couple of years.”

Naidoo, who worked with doctors Shailen Sham, Sandile Mbonambi, Zafar Khan and anaesthetist Leona Ravinath, said they had to cut the man from his chest to his belly button to remove the metal items.
“We had to remove them one by one and wash out the stomach,” Naidoo explained
