Content Ownership With Facebook by kokoye(m): 4:43pm On Feb 18, 2009 |
I just found out that Facebook decided it was going to retain ownership of subscribers' content (pictures, posts, etc.) even after users cancelled their accounts but they finally backed down after series of aluta complaints. Phew! the thought of it is scary. Imagine someone from nowhere using ur pics against you years after you closed your social networking profile - that's what happens to all these celebrities . . . someone digs up an old and innocently taken photo from ten years ago and starts blackmailing and extorting money from them. Good thing the decision was reversed though - that's the power the public opinion ought to have. Hopefully the Nigerian poeple can take a hint and stand up to what is right. A word to the wise - If it is supposed to be your dirty secret, do NOT let it get on Facebook or MySpace. you simply cannot trust the bastards out there! |

My space is for toddlers It's all about Twitter |

I am sure facebook will still bring in that decision one way or the other. Thats why I dont do those internet information things. Most people dont actually realise that all the information they put anywhere on the internet is stored up somewhere and certain people in various parts of the world can access every single detail of such. |

Well, whatever the networking site, be watchful of what you put out there on the Internet. Someone's always keeping tabs n watching. |

True but I figure that by now most people would be aware especially with employers being on these sites. |

A colleague's sister's marriage broke up recently because her husband mistakenly put their naked photos (husband, wife and baby) on facebook. Imagine a third party having ultimate rights to that photo? |

There you go. It is easy to lose it or make mistakes while uploading multiple pictures onto these sites. Before you realise it, someone's already saved a copy to start wrecking havoc. One would expect that most poeple ought to be aware but dont forget new and excited visitors join everyday and theyre eager to let their friends/ family know what theyve been up to. Some others are just plain stupid and upload nasty pics up there - some of these are teenager cousins of mine both here and in Naija. They think it's cool now that theyre young and single but these pics could mess things up for them later in life. Thank God Michael Phelps got lucky this time. I already mailed those I could. Displaying butt tattoo and stuff! By the way, b4 I started this thread, I removed every single picture of mine and untagged the ones put up by friends - b4 facebook overturns its decision yet again. And I know they will . . . soon |

oyb: He loaded loads of pictures and must have mistakenly included the nude one of his family with the lot. By the time he realised his mistake, his wife had recieved lots of calls at her work. The picture wasn't that big a deal (at least by western standards), it didn't show any naked bits. It was just a sensual picture of him, his wife and son. . . . you get the idea? Although when I first heard, I thought he must have been trying to show off his pretty family and the idea backfired. It could have been either way. |

Mark Zuckerberg seems determined to keep people's information and details with his company legally for ever. He has said they will definitely revise the terms although they have reverted temporarily to the old T&Cs. I would be wary if I have information on facebook now. It might be better to delete all such information including pics till whenever they release the new T&C's |
