Diary Of A Jobless Naija Youth - 3 (igbo Ladies Can Cook. Chai!! ) by damiloladuke: 9:25pm On Jun 05, 2015 |
I was eventually absorbed into the school system and despite that, I still pressed on with my transfer to the bank, which through God’ s miracle, eventually happened, though not as a full staff member. My first day at the classroom was so interesting as the students were so elated to have a young looking and handsome corps member like me in their midst, I posses this stature that would even make me pass as one of them. So I believe they consider me their kind and so were all free to approach me. One thing that amazed me was the names Igbo people bear. They are nice name though but very funny. I noticed names like SomtoChukwu, Nonso, Ekene, Chinedu etc was so common among them and not only that, Igbo people love bearing English names. I remember a very brilliant boy like that, FyneCountry, how can a name be FyneCountry?, one even bears Hilltree, and I wonder how the parents could have come across such names. It’s cool though, as these kids seem to like it. One other thing I noticed about Igbo people is there adoption of the English Man’s culture in terms of child upbringing, they act as white men would do. A typical Igbo father will hardly spank his child, he will decide to only give a stern warning and asked the child to promise not to repeat the wrongdoing. I also marveled at the sophistication of the Igbo people in terms of mechanization. They seem to be so versed in the mechanics and have almost every specialized device for every activity. You will hardly see an Igbo woman hawk heavy market stuffs on her head; she will rather use a wheelbarrow to ease the stress. And almost every household has a wheelbarrow over there. Another thing I noticed about the Igbo people is the possession of different food varieties. These people seem to have taken conscious efforts in developing all kinds of delicious meals especially the soups. Its also a common sight to see ladies riding on motorcycles on the road. I just wonder how that could have gotten into the Igbo culture. I don' t think i would ever have ridden on a bike that is driven by a lady. It would simply look funny. I love them soups, is it Oha, Ofesala, Banga, Okazi, Cocoyam leaf soup, Ogbono etc and the way they spice every the soups with different kinds of fish. Mheeen!!!, it was a wonderful experience. I remember all the ladies my friends and I dated during service year could cook and that would make you wonder if they brought the talent from heaven. Though it might take them hours to cook the meal to perfection, but the few minutes you would use to consume the meals would be the best dining minutes of your life. I remember a time Oluchi, a girlfriend to one corps member came around to cook for us. She spent about 3 hours and everyone was already complaining. Osaro, a close ‘ally in crime’ , started complaining bitterly and was like “How person go dey hungry, come call una make una come cook, una go come take 3 hours cooks the meal. Shey person no go don die?” . They will pound this, crush that, grate this, scrape that, wash this. And what I like most is their raw vegetables. I just love it so much I eat it everyday. I also loved abacha so much, the coconut and cassava type though. It was always an alternative to taking garri, and sometimes I used it to eat my beans. There are two kinds of abacha , the other I don’t so much like. Doesn’t look hygienic to me, how would you mix vegetables and red oil and other stuffs like that and then mix with grated cassava and eat? No, I never tasted the thing in as much as I loved tasting new delicacies. But notwithstanding, Kudos to all Igbo girls, they are extra-ordinary when it comes to getting to a man’s heart through his stomach. And not only that, they can love especially when they know you are from the South West. I wonder what Yoruba people did to have their interest. Once an Igbo lady knows you are a foreigner in their land, she gives you that attention and would even prefer taking you as friend to other Igbo guys. …later things READ PART 1 TO 5 HERE www.wenogetjob..com |
