The Lagos State Government has set up a committee to investigate the remote and immediate causes of tanker explosions in the state with a view to addressing the situation. The state Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, on Monday after a meeting with the leadership of tanker drivers’ association and other stakeholders, set up the committee, saying the government could no longer tolerate the hardship that the recurring incidents of tanker fire had inflicted on the residents of the state. He named the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, as the Chairman of the committee. Other members of the committee are the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation, Oluseyi Coker; the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Dr. Aderemi Desalu; the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo; the Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe; and the state Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp, Mr. Hygenus Omeje. Also in the committee are the Chief Executive Officer of the state Drivers Institute, a representative of the Association of Maritime Trucks owners, a representative of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and a representative of the National Association of Road Transport Owners. Ambode said the committee had two weeks to examine the causes of the tanker explosions that occurred in the last eight days and also prepare guidelines on ethical conducts for tankers and other trucks in the state. He said, “The committee will engage the insurance industry and relevant stakeholders to meet and work out appropriate insurance policy that will protect the masses in whatever havoc caused by future tanker explosions in the state. “I believe that we have created the platform to provide immediate relief for those who are affected by the incidents even as we wait for the final report on the Ipaja and Idimu tanker explosions so that we can take appropriate action to provide further relief to those affected.” Source::http://www.punchng.com/news/lagos-sets-up-committee-to-curb-tanker-explosions/ 1 Share

Peeps just typing gibberish in the name of comments. What do you expect the Governor to do? Just sit down and fold his arms or start doling out millions to the affected families carelessly? Or better still, start enacting laws without looking at the causes of the explosion? I think the guy has started well. Look at the composition of the committee, everybody involved therein is a stakeholder in one way or the other and the time frame given to submit the report is short enough to get them to work immediately. Make Una calm down joor. |

when the refineries starts working, i guess this problem will be resolved, product will be transported via pipelines and the tankers will be used for intrastate transportation. tanker drivers can easily be forced to drive at noght only and also this drivers can be strictly monitored |
