Living In/On Victoria Island by Orikinla(m): 5:24pm On Sep 17, 2006 |
I hear many Nigerians saying living in Victoria Island. Do you live in an island or on an island? I live on Victoria Island is the right way and not I live in Victoria Island. You can say I live in Ikoyi. But you cannot say I live in Victoria Island. Please, let us correct ourselves so that we can improve our knowledge of English Grammar. AskOxford will help us. http://www.askoxford.com/concise |

AskOxford will help us to separate the sheep from the goats. http://www.askoxford.com/concise Ikoyi is also an Island, but you cannot say I live on Ikoyi. Just say it right. It is better to say I live on Victoria Island. Finis. No need to argue over it. I have heard many Nigerians saying, "I does it." |
Re: Living In/On Victoria Island by Seun(m): 9:20pm On Sep 24, 2006 |
I'm not convinced. Victoria Island is a place name like Nairaland. "I live on Victoria's island" would be correct. "I live on the beautiful Island" would also be correct. "I live on Victoria Island" is not. Victoria Island in is used the same way as "Lagos" or "Abeokuta", so Orikinla is wrong. A place named Victoria Island might not even be an island. |

Seun: i was expecting someone to say the right thing and Seun finally said it, he is a smart one. , This is a situation they called Notional Prepositional Agreement. You can use IN or ON, depending what you have in mind. If you use IN, you refer to V.I as the Name of a Location, If you use ON,you refer to V.I as a geographical attribute. Sorry i'm no English teacher but if you have written GMAT International (for American Masters program), you would be familiar with all these. |
