Morning once again all, This year, I decided to go full time into farming so don't be surprised if you find out see me open several more topics on several more agricultural produce. I've started planting Maize almost a week back. My sibling had earlier planted some rows of maize and they are doing fine. I decided to add some more. Planting of maize begins from between Feb-March so that they can grow with the rain. Maize does not necessarily need manure but for more better sized maize, manure from poultry, organic manure from decaying fruits can be used. NPak fertilizer can also be used to. In this particular planting session, I won't be making use of NPK fertilizer although I plan to use Poultry manure. 1 Like |

But due to time constraint and other factors, I began planting late. I had to clear my farm manually. Some people just dig the ground and plant their maize but for me, it is more preferable if you make mounds and plant maize two places per mound. Reason for the mounds is to make them more firm and stronger against heavy wind. Pictures will come up soon enough. |

chowlade: Thank you dear. I reside in Rivers State. I won't be spending much capital on this. Note: To all you out there, you can use any small space to plant your maize. If you have a land wasting around close to you, take charge of it. I was impressed when I saw a place that was used as a dustbin, someone planted maize around them and they are doing very fine. You can use it as food or sell it for recharge card money, you can equally use it to feed your snail, grind it and mix with other ingredients to feed your poultry. That's all for now. Thank you 1 Like |

Alright, so I cleared my land, tilled the soil, raked it and made my mounds. While clearing the land, I killed a snake. Picture attached. I was shocked and rooted to the ground for about 10 seconds. It was when I saw it slithering away that my senses came back to me and I struck it with my cutlass. This happened on the 3rd of June 1 Share

On Friday June 05 2015, I planted the second set of maize. No care was taken. No watering - Reason was because the rain and the morining dew was available to do its work No weeding - At this point, weeding was almost impossible because weeding at this point could affect the roots or dislodge the seeds from where they were planted. No mulching - Maize does not really need mulch and as such, no mulching was applied. On Tuesday June 09 2015, the maize sprouted. Just a few of them though but I was really excited and delighted to see them. Pictures

Wednesday June 10 2015 Today, the sight of my maize growing was a very wonderful one. The way they were arranged neatly made me beam with smiles. I didn't do anything today apart from watch them closely in case of insects and pests. They are doing fine yet. 2 Likes

I was in my farm yesterday and I could see how well they were growing. But despite the fact that I sowed four per hole, some mounds didn't have any seedlings at all while some had just one or two seedlings. This goes to show that not all seeds are viable. That is why it is good to plant at least four or five per hole. Then after germination, you can remove one or two to leave it at three or four per hole to avoid much competition. Picture 1 shows a place I planted 4 seeds per hole. After germination, only one germinated. Picture 2 shows a mound with no germinated seeds at all despite planting 4 per 2 holes on that mound Picture 3 shows a mound with just 2 seedlings per hole despite planting 4 seeds per hole.

The white maize turned brown yesterday and died off. So saddening. My maize crops are being attacked by fruit flies. I'd have to find a solution to that as soon as possible. |

Your seed not germinating might be due to something attacking it underground. About fruit flies, can they really attack maize? |
