June 12: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun Declare Today Work Free Day by Nobody: 8:17am On Jun 12, 2015 |
Some South West states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun states have declared today as work free day in commemoration of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which was won by late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola. In a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, Lagos State governor Akinwumi Ambode said the date marked a watershed in the annals of transparent, free and fair elections in the country. Ambode said June 12, 1993 was the day Nigerians voted in one voice across ethnic, racial and religious lines, saying it represented the real Democracy Day when Nigerians said no to voting along ethnic lines. He said regrettably, 22 years after the annulment, the Nigerian nation was still grappling with some of the vices which the June 12, 1993 elections sought to confine to the dustbin of history through undue clinging to ethnic cleavages by some political gladiators. The governor urged residents to spend the day in sober reflection and in remembrance of the martyrs of the June 12 elections struggle in prayers for laying the foundation of the democracy which the nation is now enjoying. http://www.google.com.ng/url?url=http://leadership.ng/news/440115/june-12-lagos-ogun-oyo-osun-declare-today-work-free-day&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&sa=U&ved=0CBUQqQIwAGoVChMI0aKN5c2JxgIVRY7bCh1KywDH&sig2=vRT-IOXNWqQXHhp0_2e-VQ&usg=AFQjCNFP95vgEqX0C6BNCypzlvrYVacAYQ |
