Fire Guts Lagos Market by Nobody: 7:05am On Jun 15, 2015 |
the Ajah Market in Lagos State has been gutted by fire, destroying goods estimated at millions of naira. The PUNCH learnt that no fewer than 30 lock-up shops, where goods such as textile materials, generators, electronic gadgets, foodstuffs, stationary, among others, were razed by the fire on Sunday. Our correspondent learnt that nobody died or sustained injuries in the incident. Although the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained, The PUNCH was told that it started around 4.30pm. A resident, who identified herself simply as Happiness, told our correspondent that the fire was aggravated by fuel stored in some of the shops. She said, “The fire started around 4.30pm and it consumed many goods. Nobody knows what caused the fire, but there were kegs of fuel in some of the shops and that worsened the flames. Some of the traders stored fuel in the market. Some traders have been coming around to see if they can salvage some of their goods.” When contacted, the Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said fire stations from Lekki Phase 2 and Onikan were at the scene. He said the agency was still combating the fire and might not be able to make categorical statements on the incident. Fadipe said, “We are on top of the situation. More than 30 lock-up shops have been severely affected. We have two fire stations there. The Onikan Fire Station went with 10,000 litres of water, and Lekki Phase 2, with a chemical foam tank.” He advised residents to be more safety conscious and alert the fire service whenever there was any case of emergency. http://www.google.com.ng/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCEQFjABahUKEwjBx6y6g5HGAhUkCtsKHTzCAK0&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.punchng.com%2Fnews%2Ffire-guts-lagos-market-2%2F&ei=rWp-VYG9M6SU7Aa8hIPoCg&usg=AFQjCNFjmYo29mWRyCpdz3rBXnHG1cS13A&bvm=bv.95515949,d.ZGU |
