When you come for a site inspection, it is advised you keep your eyes very open. As an experienced person, you are to watch out and document all observations. First, this vegetation, this lush green grass is indicative of what might be found underground. This is what we call the walk-over survey.

I had to return to this site to do a site test to assure me of the type of soil characteristics we are going to be working on. To help me, a site test has been carried out for this land, but I am not taking any chances, I want my own independent testing. So I ordered a dig. I got ground water at about 1.2 mts, we closed for the day, more observation to be carried out later.

What was the bearing capacity you used in your design? and now seeing the nature of the soil on ground, how would you effect it on your already designed foundation |
Re: The Making Of "The Port Harcourt Duplex + Penthouse" by spyder880(m): 5:35am On Jun 19, 2015 |
podosci: The objective is to carry out an independent survey irrespective of earlier reports. This will help to design the foundation. Tests are still in progress. |

There are little things we should not ignore while inspecting a site or documenting your findings, this black line got me thinking.......

There is also a visible flow of water around the land, not too strong a flow but equally important to note. We plan to start the construction from next week.

We are still planning to start work on this site. I dropped a trip of filling sand here to fill the portion where I am going to build a site store/workers room. This is to prevent a situation where the water level rises as the rains increase and start to mess up my supplies, especially cement. 2 Likes

podosci: I plan to build a foundation that will be suitable for the environment and the building. This will mean that some sections of the foundation will be done with raft. Its either we 1. Do a normal 150mm concrete blinding, let the column starter bars stand on 300mm pads as column bases (very tall starter bars to allow for a high foundation) 2. Use wood to form another 225mm high reinforced concrete beam, cast it right on top of the blinding and column bases. 3. Do a high block wall foundation to keep the building floor as far away from water and dampness as possible 4. Damp proofing with thick nylon sheets 5. Build another 225mm concrete beam on top of the blocks before casting the over site concrete floor. (German Floor) 6. Fill the compound with enough soil to prevent water flows coming near the foundation footing. This plan is subject to change as I am delaying a bit to monitor the environment more. 2 Likes |

Hello Oga Spyder and other Oga's in the house. I am about to start up my other project which is a twin four flat storey building (8flats). The two buildings are going to be built in a 100 by 100 land at Amagba in Benin City. Please kindly help me check out the quotations the engineer gave me. for each of the building. youngterry: Actually d prices he gave you for each material are fair to me. But not sorry to say this. Your building will be of low quality First of all d guy is planning to use just 2000 blocks for the foundation of 2flats ( since its 2 down 2 up) if my calculations are right it means he will only be digging into the ground by just one or one and half feet. Dats bad. People do it. But its bad construction and also u should try to be atleast 2feet off ur natural ground level ( cos of other works). Dat numbers of block can't get u dat level. 2. He has plans to set 100 blocks with a bag of cement. Pls don't allow him to do dat. Don't be penny wise and pounds foolish. 3. I recomend a minimum of 16mm bars for column (pillar) reinforcements. Thr is a way to arrange 12mm bars dat it will be equal to d strength that 4 16mm bars will give u but seeing the guy is already planing to use 100 blocks to a bag of cement I am guessing he will also use just 4 12mm bars in the columns (pillars) He is nice to you on d prices. Except 4 cement you can get dat 4 less But you will be building a serious low quality and unsafe house I dint even see d 6inch block b4. Ar u sure u called an Engineer? 5 Likes 2 Shares |
