First, let’s set the record straight by saying that sugar in and of itself isn’t evil, per se. It occurs naturally in plenty of foods, including fruits and milk. With that being said, adding excess sugar to your dietary intake simply isn’t necessary. In fact, you’ll notice numerous positive things happen when you decide to quit sugar for life. Although people living in the Western world have been trained to desire sugary treats, as well as foods that include copious amounts of sugar for flavoring, we certainly don’t need it. If you stop eating anything but naturally occurring sugars, you’ll notice that 5 very distinctive things will happen.

1. Your Energy Will improve
Ironically, many of us have a tendency to reach for sugar-filled items, including so-called energy drinks and caffeinated beverages, when we’re tired. Yet without all the sugar, we’re guaranteed to have a higher energy level naturally. In other words, all that sugar is blocking our body’s ability to keep our energy stores at maximal levels. Plus, there will be no up-and-down with your blood sugar, so afternoon crashes will become an experience of the past.

2. Your Weight Will stabilize
Sugar makes you crave more sugar, and we’re not just talking about sugar in its raw form. Let’s face it: most sugar comes in high-fat and/or high-carb foods that have been processed or at least contain tons of unwanted ingredients. There is, of course, the exception of fruit, which are nearly all sugar. By going on a sugar detox, your body will not be subjected to the need to deal with all those additional calories. You won’t feel hungry, and you’ll end up losing weight – or at least not seeing the scale fluctuate as dramatically.

3. Your Intestines and Colon Will Perform More Efficiently
On a daily basis, they would say lots of fiber and a minimum amount of tough-to-digest, impure foods. When you remove sugar, you’re enabling your tummy and bowels to reset their abilities to process what you’ve eaten. You may even find that you go to the bathroom more often … this is a good thing. It means everything is getting back to a normal routine.

4. You’ll Stop Wanting Sugar It’s a fact:
Sugar begets sugar. After you rid it from your food regimen, you’ll slowly begin to lose the desire to eat anything with sugar in it. Fruits will taste plenty sweet, and if you do take a bite of a cake or pie, you’ll be shocked at how overpowering and overly sweet it seems.

5. Your Skin Will Look healthier:
Have you noticed that you can’t seem to crack the case on why your acne appears and disappears despite all the creams, potions, and ointments you’re using? It may be that sugar is hurting your skin from the inside out. Many people report that their skin feels and looks healthier after they stop giving in to sugar’s pull.

The point is how do you quit taking sugar permanently? I have tried several times in the past and failed woefully. Sugar is an ingredient for many consumable products, even when you don't take it raw, you'll still consume it in one form or the other. Quitting consumption of refined sugar is surprisingly an uphill task that requires serious commitment and will power. God help us.

one thing I have learnt concerning what we eat is that you dont get addicted taking the good stuff.

Anything that you eat that makes you to abnormally crave for it or get addicted is a bad for your health

for eg:
as good as fruits taste and as nutritious as it is to our body, it never leads to addiction

I think the idea is to take sugar moderately. One way or the other, our bodies still need sugar. I've seen some people who were diagnosed for lack of sugar in their systems...such people were advised to increase their intake of foods increasing blood sugar level.smiley

Absolutely, quitting sugar consumption will be perfectly difficult for sure just like quitting any favourite sweetening substance. However, it's better to get rid of anything that's detrimental to one's health no matter the addiction.

After all, putting the cart before the horse. May God helps really!

In bold, how sure are u about that? Addiction can be ubiquitous especially when it comes to something that's sweet. It only depends on an individual and not in general.

Have seen many that don't take tea, pap et al if sugar isn't added. And also don't like fruits that doesn't have sweety substance in them or that has little e.g. Garden egg.

Craving foods:

There is no single explanation for food cravings, and explanations range from low serotonin levels affecting the brain centres for appetite to production of endorphins as a result of consuming fats and carbohydrates. Foods with high levels of sugar glucose, such as chocolate, are more frequently craved than foods with lower sugar glucose, such as broccoli, because when glucose interacts with the opioid system in the brain an addictive triggering effect occurs. The consumer of the glucose feels the urge to consume more glucose, much like an alcoholic, because the brain has become conditioned to release "happy hormones" every time glucose is present. There is evidence that addiction and food craving activate some of the same brain areas. Specifically, when smokers look at pictures of people smoking it activates the same areas of the brain as when obese people look at pictures of food.

The cravings for certain types of food are linked to their ingredients. Chocolate for example, contains the amino acid phenylethylamine, which is important for the regulation of the body’s release of endorphins. Endorphins are released following a stressor and result in a sense of relaxation. Exercise and sleep are two alternative ways to help facilitate the release of endorphins. Chocolate also contains large quantities of iron, which can be depleted during the menstrual cycle. Another common craving is salt. Craving salt may be partly due to being dehydrated. When dehydrated the body loses water, electrolytes, and salt, and by ingesting salt, water retention can be increased. Craving salt can also be a sign of diabetes, heart disease, and sickle cell anaemia.
Carbohydrates, or particularly sugars, are yet another common craving. These cravings occur often in the middle of the afternoon when energy is at its lowest.

my dear. I'm talking about ADDICTION here. choosing garden egg over orange is not addiction neither is preferring sugar added pap to an opposite an addiction. like the op said is a matter of sugar beget sugar.

Addiction is compulsive or uncontrolled ingestion of a substance that can lead to adverse effects

Initially I had intended to use honey as a substitute but unfortunately, I wasn't sure whether I could get original honey. So I just gave it a rest and had a relapse. Now my mission is to cut my intake as much as possible and reduce the frequency at which I consume sugar.

Ok thanks, but most of the products listed there aren't really accessible or affordable here in nigeria. I'll visit the nearest provision store to see if I can get my hands on one for a trial
