MKO Abiola defeated a northerner to win the presidential election in 1993.

Obasanjo defeated Buhari to win a second term in 2003.

Any Buhari-backed Yoruba candidate will win irrespective of whether PDP fields a northerner or not when the time comes.
What matters most is the north being convinced that they have exhausted their turn - at least 8 straight years.
