Even if you don’t know what he looks like, chances are you’ve heard the name Carl Icahn. He’s the guy in the picture below. And he just sold his stake in Netflix for $2 billion.
This guys knows investments. He is 79 years old and is currently ranked the 31st richest person in the world. He entered Wall Street in the 60s, amassed a $21 billion fortune and earned a reputation as an activist investor and corporate takeover raider.

In 2012, Icahn bought himself 10% of Netflix. It’s almost like he’d been investing for 50 years and knew this was going to make him some money. He spent around $321 million on shares three years ago.

Icahn bought each of his shares for $58. Yesterday when he sold the lot, they were going at around the $700 mark. To put that into perspective, that’s over a 1000% increase in his original investment.

He’s pocketed $2 billion, which isn’t bad at all but it could have been so much more. According to Forbes, over the years he has been dumping his Netflix shares slowly but surely. If he’d held on to all of his original shares until now, they’d have been worth $3.8 billion.

His son Brett Icahn, who first brought the deal to his father’s attention, wanted to keep all their Netflix shares while the billionaire investor decided to cut back, slicing their positions in half in 2013.

If you feel bad on Icahn for losing out on an even bigger profit, don’t. He currently owns 53 million shares in Apple, worth around $6.6 billion. And he sold his luxury yacht a couple of years back because he ‘got bored spending time on it’.
