If I've had 20 quarrels with my woman, 16 of them have got to do with my selfish and reckless mismanagement of hard earned money. She's always asked me to be circumspect when it comes to money but I've not always listened. Or most times I simply pretended listening and still went ahead with the plans I had on how the cash was going to be spent. The consequences have been devastating.

You're the saviour of the world. Stop trying to solve the problems of the world. These have been some of her lines.

Now, it's very much obvious my financial future is at risk if I continue to pretend listening to her. I do actually listen to her now. When the chips are cold, she's the FIRST to bear the brunt; those I gave carelessly to have NO idea what's cooking back home. I've been a good man outside and a terrible man within. I changed all that. I'm willing to be called a good man within and be tagged a bad man without. I'm very much comfortable with that.

I used to wonder why a lot of my company's retires and other very senior staff in the hierarchy weren't particularly doing well financially. My colleagues and I had looked scornfully at that with the belief they were directionless, plan less and wasteful with their money during their first 10, 15 or even 20 years of service. Now, I know better. They simply repeatedly did the mistakes I was doing. It was obvious I would have ended like most of them, if not worst, had I continued to follow the path I was following. Thank God for my colleague that brought up the matter.

Twenty years seem far away. But it's just a short time. Just 4 World Cups. It's here. And we look stunned as to how we have found ourselves financially behind schedule. I've got senior colleagues who simply sprout to life having just a few years to leave the system. I've seen fear and panic in their eyes. See rush cheesy. Maybe they had plans but didn't have the discipline to follow them through. Maybe they didn't have any. Whatever. The game has ended. It's time to be assessed. Many fail the test of financial security.

I've also seen senior colleagues using retirement money or gratuity to build homes. SMH!

He who fails to plan HAS PLANNED to fail. You don't need a plan on how to fail. Just don't have a plan. That's enough for failure.

A colleague and I were chatting this afternoon as we were having our break. And we discussed how far we have come, financially. We've not done too well. As we talked on, we all agreed we made certain financial Mistakes that are responsible for our present financial status. We didn't arrive there by error; certain errors are responsible, and it's these I intend to share with us. Maybe we can learn a thing or two.

Inadequate financial literacy: It took me over 3 years to even understand how money works. All I did was to get my salary, spend it and desperately waited till another comes and the cycle never ended. Most of us do not really understand how money works, and our educational system never even dared to give us a crash course on money. We were simply bombarded with Fourier Series, Calculus and other theorems that do not really matter in the real scheme of life. Life is totally different. Money has rules and till we actually understand them, we won't do well financially.

Impulse Spending: This one is a killer. Most people are aware of this medium of waste. Practise this act and you're damn sure of being in lack. This was one major weakness I HAD. Not anymore. I've bought countless things purely on impulse. I didn't think through; I just bought. And the consequences of impulsive spending is poverty or lack. Now, I buy things when it's absolutely necessary. Emotions are a major factor when it comes to money. And the poor are always emotional when it comes to money. The rich have mastered their emotions. They only spend money when they want to meet their NEEDS. Only the poor and thieving politicians throw away money.

Indiscipline: To be rich requires work. Hard work. And the poor are averse to hard work. It takes a lot of discipline to follow a budget. I hardly followed my budget then. It takes a lot of discipline to think on the appropriate means to make more money. The poor only likes spending. And spending doesn't involve much work. Just dole out the cash and it's gone. It takes discipline to keep money. I lacked it too.

Inability To say NO : This was one major financial flaw I had back then. I can't recall ever saying NO anyone's financial demands. That was a fatal character flaw. You can't be wealthy meeting all of people's needs. I've practically taken loans to meet people's needs. Their needs never end. Now I know better. I still give but I won't hesitate to say NO if I have to. I've got to be true to myself. To be rich is to be sincere and prudent with money.

Especially when it comes to relatives and even.loved ones, one can hardly say NO. I had to work on myself. In the past years, it's being others before I. Now, no more. We erroneously believe people will die if we don't always meet their needs. Nothing could be further from the truth. Last December, I sincerely asked my parents to bear with my inability to meet their demands. They're still live and kicking. Even if you're there, people will live on. That's life. I know our African culture requires we shoulder others problems but there's clearly a limit, and we must endeavour to strike a balance. Keep spending the cash on them, and you're tagged a GOOD MAN. You will remain poor as far as you wanna be a good man. Good men are almost always poor cheesy

Careless giving: There have been countless times I've given out money immediately I saw some people. I just thought they needed. It's very good to give, but it must be done with wisdom. Money shouldn't be spent anyhow. Giving must be meaningful and purposeful. Now, I know better.

Trying To Impress Others: Sometimes we do it even without knowing. I've done this a few times. It's a terrible habit. We need to live realistic lives. And we must live within our means. It's stupid to live an exaggerated life so as to impress some people. It's epic foolishness. Oftentimes those we intend to impress hard notice us. Why the bother? It another habit of the poor to try to give people a false sense of their financial status. Now, I don't give a hoot. I simply live MY life. Anyone can make their conclusions; it's their business.

Lack of Project: My first give years were indeed experimental. The errors are so depressing. Money must go somewhere. Nature abhors vacuum. Something must take your money. Since I didn't have my projects taking the money, others simply get me theirs. Wicked people. U go blame them? No. Blame me. Now, I've a lot of projects ongoing and I barely have enough for my self and loved ones, let alone OTHERS. No more vacuum.

Not Involving My Woman: Ego has hardly paid any man. It has caused more pain than it has given joys. I didn't actively involve my woman in my finances those years. Now I do. Women can be an oasis of wisdom. Mine is a bundle of financial wisdom. I've hardly listened to her. I used to just her the family upkeep and limited her foray. Now, she plays a crucial role in decision making and the results have been excellent.

If we don't make deliberate and conscious efforts at money, we won't be rich. If I understood these principles before now, I would have certainly being in a better position finally. This I know.

We need to start taking money seriously. When the chips are down, we're all left on our own. No one can eternally shoulder your problems. We need to be smart with our money. It hardly comes without effort. Why spend it without effort? Be disciplined. Enjoy with tomorrow in mind. It comes so fast. Without financial discipline, we will be stuck in the rat race forever. The rich are highly disciplined when it comes to money. They hardly give it away. That's why we hate them. We tag them as miserly and stingy. They simply understand how money works.

It's never too late to begin doing the right thing. Now, I hardly fall into these death traps. Take your financial future seriously. Work. Save. Invest. Give. Apply wisdom.

Please, avoid these financial Mistakes. Follow them, and lack is sure. It takes a lot of discipline to be rich; that's why many are poor.

To be poor is the easiest thing to achieve in life. You do nothing to be poor. Just find excuses. And excuses abound. You don't need to look far.

We need resolution to avoid all these fatal mistakes. Resolution is the directing and impelling force in individual progress. Without it no substantial work can be accomplished. Not until a man brings resolution to bear upon his life does he consciously and rapidly develop, for a life without resolution is a life without aims, and a life without aims is a drifting and unstable thing.

With resolution, we can make meaningful progress towards financial stability in a very short while. To achieve much in life, we must live a targeted life. A life without target is the uttermost misery.

When a man makes a resolution, it means he's dissatisfied with his conditions, and is commencing to take himself in hand with a view to producing a better piece of workmanship out of the mental powers of which his character and life are composed, and in so far as he is true to his resolution he will succeed in accomplishing his purpose.

Half hearted and premature resolution is no resolution at all, and is shattered at the first difficulty.

You must resolve to be wealthy, and be deliberate, consistent and unswerving in it. To be wealthy is hard work.

The total man is made up of the spirit, soul and body...What unites the three in every endeavour is resolution. Paul said somewhere in the bible:"That I ought to do, I find myself not doing; and what I ought not to do, I find myself doing"; Resolution is when the three dimensions are united to achieve a purpose and that affirmation attracts positive assent!

We can wish and long to change our ways, but without resolution wishes will be horses...

Like you said "Resolution is the directing and compelling force in individual progress". We are a sum total of the decisions we have resolved to take!! Often, the difference between a rich man and a poor man is the decision they resolved to take!

BTW, thanks for the correction.

We thank the Lord God Who through Seun has made this platform possible. I've learned a whole lot from this site. I'm still learning. The cycle doesn't end. God bless him.

For what it's worth, I find your kind words very encouraging and heart warming. With all due respect, I won't trade them for cheap money cheesy

I'm delighted Ishilove made possible to hit the front page. He's been a blessing. I'm very fortunate and happy you found the thread informative and exciting. Information is power. Information is money. The rich simply have enough more information than the poor.

You don't really need to wait till you start working before you apply financial principles and rules. You will go far more quickly if you are armed with the knowledge before you start working.

Money is serious business, and ONLY those who respect it's rules will ever have enough to meet their needs and to spare.

I pray God gives you something meaningful to do soon.

God bless your soul!

Yeah, truth is, not everyone who works hard makes money. And no one should be deceived that wealthy people don't work hard. They are among the hardest workers on earth. They may not work physically but their mental duty may not be very easy for an inexperienced to handle.

Resolution and targets enables one achieve goals. But resolution and target without work is as useless as a used tissue paper.

Sometimes i say ask myself, "if undereducated people can hustle in their shops in Alaba, BBA, ASPAMDA, Computer Village, Idumota, Balogun, Main Market, Aba, Wuse market, etc, then what excuse does a B.Eng holder have?". How long do i continue blaming the government for not putting food on my table rather than trying to put the food myself? At least i have my hands, legs, health, life, all intact so what excuse do i have not to be successful?

I have resolved to be better than I was last year and am working towards that.

Brilliant, bro. Thanks.

Actually, by HARD WORK, I wasn't merely talking about physical work though that's a part of it. The most difficult work is mental work. I spent more than 12 years fishing( predominantly physical activity), and spent just 4 or so years in the higher institution, and the stress of the latter is more than that of the former.

I like your drive and resolution. I pray God brings your intent to fruition.

Thanks bro.

It's never too late or too early to start planning one's life. Most individuals live a life without plan. What a tragedy!

I've lived that way in times past. Just lived from day to day, month to month, and even years to years without a clear cut plan for my life. I simply drifted like a ship without a course or destination or captain.

Endeavour to back up that plan with resolve and self discipline. A man does not live until he starts to discipline himself. Every plan, not minding how grand or noble, MUST be backed with self discipline for it to come to pass.

Draw the plan. Detail it. Give it a time period. Back it up with discipline. Be tough on yourself. Achieve success.

God bless the OP! I have to print the points out and i will paste it in my room. I have equally sent it to a few friends that are in similar situation like me.
This is another great thread.
I am guilty of all the listed points.
All the same, thanks to my wife for being a good manager, if not we would have been in a big mess.

Really touching one there. We need to constantly remind ourselves of these loopholes so we can be in charge of our financial future. I'm giving myself a few months after which I shall compare the difference(if any ). But one thing is sure: I can't continue this way. It leads to misery and suffering.

Tell your friends. Send an email to them. Bring up the issue during a discussion. The more we talk about making more money, the more our brains figure out the way to get it.

Thank God for your wife. Listen to her. She could be your saving grace. Grow above the ego.

The only way to avoid any mess is planning and discipline.

Oh well, lesson learnt.

It's NEVER too late to start on the new path. No matter how far we may have traveled on the wrong path, we can never arrive at the right destination.

We all regret we didn't start a few weeks, months or even years ago, but let's not allow that work against us.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the next best time is NOW!

You will never regret for starting this July.

Well, no be only you dey do so, Oga, it's quite common with men to be touchy and edgy anytime they are down to their last dime... and na we the wives dey always bear the brunt.

That is why we are always quick to advise and point out loopholes when they whip up crazy and unrealistic notions on how to go about any particular expenditure that might end up in flames in the long run.

My bro, many of us have also been caught in the web of foolishness and arrogance. I certainly have fallen in that regard. But now, I'm wiser. I've brought her into the inner chambers of my revenue, and for the past months, I've only regretted the consequences of not listening the best financial planner on the planet.

The gold thing is, it's never too late. Adjustments are always necessary. Thanks for contributing to the matter. Best wishes.

It's indeed a wise decision. Sometimes we take our friends and loved ones for granted that we forfeit their wisdom. In the most cases, the solution to our problem is so close but we tend to look ominously outside. ...

I agree NOT ALL women possess this rare financial virtue but a whole lot of them actually possess it. And they are always willing to give it out to us for free....
